Tyson Frizell discussion

Ready was literally just proposing a hypothetical, he doesn’t have any actual mail.

Our back row stocks are no less thin than theirs so it doesn’t even make sense, plus that final year for Frizell is a player option so there’s no need to do it as a swap if he did wanna move on.
 
I think Tyson needs to be our priority re-signing at the moment. I would offer him the same contract he is already on for next year and then a reduced contract for 2025, maybe 450-500k with incentives. Here is my reasoning:

1. With Kai Pearce-Paul coming next year there is no better player to show him how to be a professional backrower than Frizz. All you ever hear from the team is how dedicated he is, how team first he is and how well he trains. KPP will get to learn all of those things from him. KPP also does not appear physically ready to play 80 minutes from day 1 in the NRL and Frizz is the perfect player for another 2 years who could by 2025 transition to a bench role where he can play edge or middle. Frizz's value far exceeds what he can bring on the field.

2. I hear you, surely that cash can be better spent elsewhere, but can it really be? We have room under the cap this year with 2 spots still left to fill. If we don't fill those we can forward pay contracts for next year and have more for 2024. We are reportedly paying 400k of Klemmer's deal to the Tigers for this year which will also come off the books. At a rough estimate that should mean we should have 700k we're under the cap after re-signing Frizz based on all the salaries we have this year alone moving into next year. I doubt we're going to offer Hymel another contract who should be on decent coin. The rest of the re-signings (Fitz, Mann as members of the 17) would probably get a downgrade or similar money. We also have decent depth in many positions. Miller, Pryce and the juniors for Fullback. Ponga and Gamble for 6. Hastings to play 7 and if injured Crossland could do a job or Gamble. Brailey hopefully back to start the year. Plenty of forwards pushing through as well as backs. There's no major piece coming off next year who is going to improve us massively. We need to keep building from within. Something which should cost less.

3. Make him the captain for this year and next. Honestly, the guy is an absolute warrior on the field. A follow me type. Off the field I can't tell you one bad thing I've ever heard spoken about him. That is a man I'd be proud to call my captain. He's often battered and broken but plays on regardless. He's someone the club should be tremendously proud of. After hearing him speak last night at the press conference I'm even more impressed. Ponga is our best player and you can keep the co-captain thing in place if that panders to his ego but he needs someone strong beside him. Frizz is that guy.

4. His form has been excellent to start the year. Even the last few years I think he's been one of our stronger performers.

Too long didn't read (HarveeeGee needs these for every single post) - Re-sign Frizz as our top priority for 2 years. 700k for 2024 and 500k for 2025. Good role model, awesome leader, great player. Value on and off the field.

I think Tyson is in some of the best form I’ve seen him in, since he started at the club and have no problem with looking to extend his contract at or about the $$$ and length you’ve proposed…

He reminds me a lot of Aiden Guerra, who I was a big fan of when we secured him from the Roosters…

BUT I don’t think he is a player that would thrive as a ‘captain’. He is a born leader and will do all the things you’ve flagged in bringing the younger brigade on but he doesn’t need the title and I personally think it would be more of a burden than a blessing for somebody like Tyson IMHO

Appreciate the sentiment and happy to disagree as I don't think the club will do it anyway. I think Tyson would take it in his stride and it really wouldn't change much of his game at all. He'd still be a leader just with a title. I'd still expect Hastings to do most of the on field leadership along with Ponga. The captain just becomes a symbol of the club, more or less.
 
Can't let his 300th go past without paying tribute to Friz. He's a quiet achiever, as illustrated by this thread which is only on his second page! But he's given 100% to us since joining the club in 2021 (feels like he's been here more like a decade, tbh), and has done so much for our young forward pack this season. Still invaluable to the side at the age of 34. Really hope we can give him one more season!

Seem to be doing a much better job of winning milestone matches now which is good. They were almost certain losses in the past

Before the club made a big splash for Dylan Brown, he was probably the last marquee signing during AOB's time. Came at a time when the club did need a bit of a mainstay anchor in the backrow so it's a testament to the club they found guys like Lucas/McEwen/Manulelua and former guys like KPP etc

I'm kind of 70/30 keep him but totally understand him leaving for a bigger payday even if it means relocating. Whether there is a market I'm not sure.
 
Love to keep him, if he goes than deal wasn't meant to be.

Surely, though we already would have offered him some sort of role post footy though, bloke is the epitome of a role model.
 
I’ll preface by saying I was also on the keep Gags side of the fence - at least before his average few games. I thought he would have also been a good candidate to work with juniors/lower grades.

I’d love to keep Frizz and as has been said, a role afterwards if he wants it.

I think Gags backed his ability to still perform next year and if we couldn’t be certain, he was right to chase some $$$.

I think Frizz would be slightly more inclined to settle for a year on the bench and hopefully win a premiership. I think in terms of spots - I think he’d be worth one. And I think we’d be able to creatively account whatever $$$ it takes to keep him.

In saying all of that, if he wants to go for a pay day somewhere, great, or if somebody is offering 2 years great for him. But, he’s somebody I hope we don’t lose out on for 50k.
