Trey Mooney discussion

Per game averages -

Leo Thompson 2023, aged 22/23 (right at the peak of our "have we found the next James Fisher-Harris?" Leo mania): 85 running metres, 30.04 tackles @93.52%, 0.12 offloads.
Trey Mooney 2026 so far, aged 23/24 (bust, waste of money): 81 running metres, 31 tackles @92.34%, 1.86 offloads.

I think Niukore will help stiffen our FRF rotation next year and potentially remove some of the Mooney talk.

Yeah maybe, issue is Frizell will be gone.

I think Trey will just figure some stuff out and get better. I think Canberra is extremely overrated as a development club and there's stuff he'll get better at with us. Becoming a week to week first grader takes time.

Also think the signs are so good with Hopwood and there will rarely be pressure on Trey to be anything more than our third best middle.

I know Friz is a billion years old (and out injured recently) but I think Niukore is a downgrade, at least in 2027
Against Friz I agree, he will bring some size and aggression overall that Frizz isn’t able to provide I feel though. Work rate will be way lower though

Sometimes the stuff someone is working on doesn’t improve gradually/incrementally, but there’s a game where it all comes together. Hopefully that’s a sign of things to come.

His support play has been really impressive. That’s one thing that’s actually been there all season. Whenever there’s a chance in he’s right there to capitalise.

If he can keep up the rest of his work rate, he’ll prove to be a very good buy. With the way the game is going he’s going to score a lot of tries for a front rower

Heading into the season no one thought he was going to be a finished product, but that's easier to say when everything is hypothetical and you aren't seeing the bumps of player development in real time. That sense of perspective can quickly go out the window and patience gets abandoned. That's not a Mooney-specific thing, happens with most young players who get thrust into a bigger role.

He's a very talented player who's learning what it means to be a weekly starting NRL prop on his feet. You'd hope that by the end of the season games like today are far more common than the past few weeks but I'd still give him a pass mark for his season so far all things considered.

Say what you want about him coming to life when we're on the front foot and there's a chance to score, having a middle who's yet another source of points is pretty ****ing handy. We've copped a lot of players at this club who don't want to push up in support when there's something on.

And I thought he led the way with the tough stuff yesterday too, take away the tries and he was still our best forward on the day. 32 tackles in 48 minutes, when we had the ball for a lot of his time on the field, is pretty bloody busy.
