Trey Mooney discussion

He came up with one horrific read in D but he was leading the tackle count among out middles when he came off.

I don’t disagree with the criticisms but he’s been way more good than bad overall so far. And the second stint being way better thing is actually good? Most props are worse in the second stint.
Hes certainly a trade up to what weve had, and hes young with massive upside! Fair criticism and criticism from fans who have been burned, but i like him. I take him over Leo.

i thought it he was great clearly our best middle. He has been everything we wanted him to be, if you want a hard running prop who looks to dominate and always looks for 2nd phase your going to have to deal with the odd error.

I thought Jacob but it was pretty close.

It’s Trey’s jersey to lose, no one else is going to run for over 100m every week.

Agreed, he’s been way more good than bad. This is his first season getting consistent minutes.

Few moments that let him down, when we were “hanging on for a win”.

Jumping the gun a smidge to put the hit on Koula - penalty. Big reward if not offside though.
Trying a chip over the top - 6 tackle set.
Pre-mediated run into contact and offload straight to Manly player. Don’t mind the intent to offload, but he didn’t seem to care where it went.

Just a bit of discipline and game awareness undid some of his good work. I was about to praise Saulo and him for stepping things up a bit, when he threw the offload intercept.

Seems to take a while to warm into games, does his best work second half. Think his fitness comes to the front. Which is nice to have.

Defensively, he is always getting himself involved in tackles. Some solid runs too. Not the damaging wrecking ball type player I desperately want to see, but he does a decent job.

Overall, I much prefer him to Leo of 2025.

I tend to look at these things in terms of cap hit. Is he James Fisher-Harris, the gold standard player for always doing the exact right thing on a footy field in that position? No. But I invite you to name all the starting props making $550K or less until 2029 who are better. I’ll wait.

I accept the criticisms but I think he’s going to be a really good player for us. And you need a bit of wild man energy out there.

So far Mooney has run for more metres and made more tackles than our previous two Props, Thompson and D Saf. I expect the trend to continue into next week….

I'd also like to point out in our own half most teams have there backs do most of the hit ups in your own half there wouldn't be to many forwards having runs unless of a kick off

Yeah and Dyl Lucas is an unusually active back rower in yardage too so we’re not absolutely hurting for it.
He has been good, but only when we have been on the front foot and in dominant games
Unfortunately the losses apart from first half v roosters he has been missing

Really needs to step up as potential is there for a good player but not showing it

This is only his second season where he's played more than four games ... still a very inexperienced player. I haven't been impressed by him, but he's still got a lot of learning to do. I do think people expected him to come in this year and have this huge impact, which isn't really realistic.

You make some good points.
I think frustration and his pay cheque plays a big part, Not his fault, I guess.
What really annoys me though is that he wears Chiefs jersey but doesn't seem to like doing the tough work and then runs like one of the best props in the game close to the try line.

Hopefully he can develop

He like others needs experience around him, having only JSaf means when he is off the others struggle, all to young, Saulo not quite what we need up front and the likes of Mooney, Hopwood need a bit more time, might be time to give Crouch and/or Hola a go.
