Toohey's News

I would be inclined to look at the replacements we have to cover Best and Lucas as it seems ridiculous to let one or both leave and then spend heaps purchasing replacements.
At this time we seem to have more quality depth to cover Lucas rather than Best, so for the exercise it’s keep Best.
Personally I want to keep both.

I agree best is the priority at the moment. I love Lucas more as a player, but we have a replacement second rower in Manu coming through, but we don't have a centre beating down the door. On top of that, Gags likely having his last year. Makes Bradman more important to resign imo.
I also dont think either should be significantly upgraded in regards to $$. There is still a bit of "potential" to be reached before excess $$$ are offered. Im hoping the knights become like other big clubs now (after kaylyn and brown long term signings) and we pay rep money AFTER they become rep players, not on potential.... they are both still 24 or 25 from memory? Elite pay days in there late 20's, if they are origin players, is what this contract should be sold as a stepping stone towards.

Part 2 of Tooheys news 30/4

Ponga and Parr worked out his new deal in 2 weeks and very few people knew talks were happening. Ponga wanted to be the one who told his team mates when the deal was done. Ponga is thought to have signed for a modest increase to his current contract, with the salary cap set to increase by up to 20%, so a paycut in effect.

Saifiti, Best and Lucas are the next targets. Lucas is managed by Moses, who is "dirty" on the Knights for not appointing Blake Green as coach. Lucas is on over 700k now and Toohey speculates he could get up to 950k with new teams interested.
Who gives an actual **** how Moses feels about the club. Why is that even a factor when negotiating in good faith on behalf of a player who has nothing to do with another client of his?

And on what planet are the Knights paying upwards of $1m to keep Lucas? **** off. Let the gronk walk if he wants to be greedy. He delivers value at $700k.

The club genuinely needs to blacklist Moses - Ugly inside and out.

There isn't a single player out of Lucas, Best, J Saf & Dom that we should feel good about losing.

I think with these guys the extensions shouldn't be as long as the Ponga one because yes it is *conceivable* we could have good replacements in a few years. Personally I think it's a bit fanciful to think Manulelua or any young centre will be there by 2028. In subsequent years maybe, but not soon.

Very different to Brown/Ponga where you would be surprised if we could find anyone as talented as them anytime soon. Because we've never had a fullback as talented as Ponga and we've only had one more talented half than Brown. In almost 40 years.

We've definitely had more players of comparable ability to Lucas, Best, J Saf & Dom over the years.

The pitch is pretty simple. We think we can win the comp by 2029. Ponga has signed on on a deal which allows this group to do that if others go with him. If Lucas, Best, J Saf and Dom follow his lead & re-up for a couple more years each on about what they're already on (I can see Jacob doing us a favour though), that gives us a strong core of rep calibre talent to help us get there. Be a part of something special or **** off to a compound, make more money, and finish in the bottom four.

Surely people look at how he handled the Galvin stuff and you have to say what a big win it was for Benji and the Tigers. He went from having $6m over five years or whatever it was to $750k over 3 thinking his value would rise over the years at the Bulldogs whereas in actual fact it’s gotten worse if he were to be off contract tomorrow.
That’s a terrible look for Moses and how he tried to play it.

Even if we meet them in the middle with Lucas I’m not sure how it will go but if it’s like Best there shouldn’t be a big issue keeping him.
Its a great example of how Moses God-complex and relentless gamesmanship is a risk to his clients.

Lucas has hardly improved since we re-signed him. In fact, there's questions around his physical peak being impacted by his most recent injury. I'd be offering him $750-800k and if another club is dumb enough to pay him $900k plus then Lucas needs to figure out if he wants to pack up and leave the club for an extra 40k net p.a. after the ATO and Moses take their share of that difference.
