Toohey's News

29/4

Nothing about the current team in this one.

Owen Craigie had a stroke and is currently in hospital doing rehab. It sounds like it's going well.

The only other story is about a 16 year old battling cancer.

I saw Owen a few weeks back and he looked in good health and looked to of lost a fair bit of weight (had been a good 6 or 7 years before that). glad to hear his doing ok!

Part 2 of Tooheys news 30/4

Ponga and Parr worked out his new deal in 2 weeks and very few people knew talks were happening. Ponga wanted to be the one who told his team mates when the deal was done. Ponga is thought to have signed for a modest increase to his current contract, with the salary cap set to increase by up to 20%, so a paycut in effect.

Saifiti, Best and Lucas are the next targets. Lucas is managed by Moses, who is "dirty" on the Knights for not appointing Blake Green as coach. Lucas is on over 700k now and Toohey speculates he could get up to 950k with new teams interested.

Who gives a **** if he is dirty we didn’t sign his client as the coach. I’m glad this manger has minimal involvement in this club now. I think Lucus is worth close to 800k. Weather or not we can afford that. He would get that on the open market I say. 950k is seems over but maybe with the cap increase. It would be disappointing if we could not resign him.

Thinking on it, if Eli Katoa didn’t have his brain injury, I think there’s the one edge forward I’m prepared to shell out that much for.

I think where Lucas is at, having him + a league average prop as key rotation members is better than having an above average prop and an above average back rower. But you pay Lucas a million dollars and then it becomes - can you actually afford a league average prop in said salary slot anymore?

I think Katoa was good enough that he allowed below average middles to look good. Lucas isn’t there. Probably won’t ever be, Katoa was like you made the perfect edge forward in a lab.

I love Lucas as a player. Apparently he loves the club. But his agent doesn't like who we hired as coach? Most agents would still act in his client's best interests. If Moses is going to hold us over a barrel, my want for the club to not have to deal with him almost outweighs resigning Lucas. Moses is getting less and less clubs that would deal with him, when that starts eating his business I'll be happy.

Also in there is a big call from Baz: He thinks Toby Winter could be a starting centre in the NRL as early as next year.

That wouldn’t be too bad would it. He won’t even be on a top 30 deal yet so if he comes straight in and he’s good right away like Bradman was, which is a big ask but some outside backs absolutely are like that, that’s almost like legally cheating the cap. A good player for free, essentially.

700k max for Lucas, even that sounds high to me. Close, but still not quite in the elite category like Martin, Riki, Young, Chrichton, Preston, Katoa. On a side note, wonder if Isaac Moses pulled some strings at the dogs with AOB, effectively sabotaging their season.

Is lucas worth 950? Seems really steep. I love him as a player, but thats origin level backrower money.
I hope he returns from injury and convinces us all that he's worth that and more.

I was just thinking that, $750k max even with the new cap TBH great player and great clubman, but his not worth marquee money.

Honestly think Lucas is comfortably better than all these players, except Katoa. Not better than Crichton over his career but I certainly wouldn't swap them right now. It's far from an easy decision to stand firm on that kind of number.
