Toohey's News

Not sure if it's accurate but AI says in 2025 he played every game,
Averaged,
29.2mins, 72m, 27pcm, 24tks, 2.5mtks,
The minutes are wrong. Majority of his games last season were starting on an edge. He would have averaged double that in minutes I reckon. The rest is about right.

POS whole recruitment strategy looks to be making sure the roster is in contention shape in 2028-29. I can see why he decided to say no to Barnett, but it still sucks to see him go to Brisbane when he wanted to come here.
Ponga needs to re-sign or we aren’t contenders. You can say we are well equipped to replace him with Sharpe, but we lose a lot if Ponga leaves. I’d be confident in us contending I’d Ponga re- signed. Him and Brown look like they’ve played together for years, it could be special with a couple seasons under the belt.

I’m fine with re-signing Ponga as long as he is willing to take a pay cut, he is way to unreliable as a player to be on what he is on, what we are paying Ponga is what you would pay if he played 20+ games a year at 100% for 80 minutes per week, but he is Isn’t and with how much he claims to love Newcastle and the Knights and how much he wants to win a premiership with us, if that’s true at all than I’m sure he’d be fine with taking a pay cut to help out our salary cap

You can do that with a lot of deals on the books now. If you add Hastings, Brailey & Cogger together, it’s probably about the same as what we’re now paying Brown & Smith. KPP was on $800K and Leo I think $400K in his last season, so that’s more than we’ll pay for Trey and Marata next year. Etc.

Also Sandon is showing he isn't the answer at 7, his a very good utility though.

I’m going to be interested in seeing how Smith progresses after having his first bad game for us, I’m not going to go into hyperbole and act like he isn’t a good player, the Warriors game was hard since our forwards were getting rinsed after all the penalties and were to tired to even get out of our own 40 half the time, which puts more pressure on both halves as it means they have to make every little chance count and turn it into points

so far he is 2/3 in my books I’ll reserve judgement for now, I do expect Smith to be better in the coming games but it will only work if our forwards put in.

He’s a backup half who would actually start on a couple of other teams (at least on ability, Flanagan nepotism aside). That’s a nicer problem to have than shuffling between NSW Cup quality halves as our starters like we’ve been doing for the last few years. Thought he was close to best on ground against Manly all things considered, and closer to the opposite end of that spectrum against the Warriors. Still haven’t seen him in the actual role he was signed to play so I think he’s doing alright all things considered.
