Toohey's News

Brodie jones has had a great career at the knights. He is one of the great survivors. Whether you rate him or not he could’ve been cut at any point. He had a really good year in 2022 and since probably developed into a solid bench rotation middle. He will end up at the bears no doubt probably Melbourne or someone for a year.

First Toohey's news of the season has hit a day early.

Says Sharpe will play on the left in Vegas with Brown on the right.
Says Holbrook is "playing cagey" still - but backs that to be our halves.

Brodie Jones has been told he won't be re-signed and can leave immediately if he gets an offer.

SKD is in town and Knights have offered him a job in the football department.

Will Sullivan had 5 concussions last season and hasn't trained for a month because of a concussion at training. His fate is in the hands of specialists.

Tom Cant knocked back Mal Meninga and the Bears to stay at the Knights.

Holbrook says he has nothing against Marzhew and thought Marz was our best v the Bulldogs.

From that, it sounds like Smth may have played himself out of the 7 jumper on the weekend.

It's been how many years since Toohey has any inside word? His opinion is about as accurate as most ono here.
I mean he literally just broke the news of Jones not being re-signed and being told he's free to leave. Have you heard that anywhere else? Also hadn't heard about Holbrook's current relationship with Marzhew, or that Sullivan bloke having concussions and not training.

The guy clearly has some connections to the club still. Never made sense to me the people that bag him out. I appreciate having some info from the club, even if it's just club approved propaganda.

He still absolutely does offer more insight into the Knights than any other journo even if it's been more Toohey's Opinions than Toohey's News at times in the last few years. The rest at the Herald just regurgitate what other journos are already reporting elsewhere or quotes we could hear ourselves on the club website, and the Sydney media couldn't care less to look up this way unless it's Ponga/Brown related.

I swear some of the herald articles these days are nearly word for word taken from this forum, although they usually ring the club to get a quote or two and do a bit of fact checking to round out the articles.

All valid points

He definitely is more qualified to offer an opinion than any of them so I don’t mind it when he does. Plus even when he misses on stuff replying to fans it’s not that big of a deal as it’s mostly trivial thing.
Doesn’t act like he’s gods gift to the world unlike many others

The bit of the article not commented on yet is the club giving SKD a role.
He was respected assistant coach at title winners Hull KR last year, and I think he has a lot of skills in common with Dom Young, Fletcher Hunt and Kyle McCarthy - and maybe even Marcus Dacre.
A tall winger who competes for high balls would be nice for a change.

Jones has had a handful of moments where he looked like he found his niche in a particular bench forward role - Initially as an edge that could cover centre if required, remembering that one game against the Sharks where he sealed a comeback from centre. Later he pushed into a reliable middle role who would make 99% of his tackles, get a quick play-the-ball, and regularly hit 1%er plays that made a difference.

Last year he appeared to have regressed to being sub-par in most elements of the game. The only forwards I would select Jones ahead of now are Hola and Sullivan - Cant, Hopwood, Manuleleua, ESL, and Crouch all offer something more in a bench role.

Maybe flying the coup to try something different gives him a late career resurgence - as a local boy who has grown up and played his whole career here.

26/2

Says Knights are keen as mustard to sign Barnett for next year, but he has plenty of interest from other clubs.

Says Brodie Jones has turf toe and needs to rest his foot for an extended time.

praises Holbrook for his bravery in ignoring all the pundits and picking his own halves combination

Says Croker will start at lock, Frizz at prop and Mooney on the bench.

Says Manuleleua could come off the bench for his debut.

Says Alex McKinnon, Andrew Ryan and SKD are part of the biggest ever shakeup in our pathways under Chris James and lists 2 or 3 guys I've never heard of as going or gone already.

Says we have second row covered and lists players all the way down to Kingston Seu seu in Matts, but for some odd reason doesn't list Roy Simpson, who, IMO, is quickly becoming a clone of his father. Kade McKay gets a mention, and I have to say, Kade and jett McKay have been very impressive in Matts.

Under the clever sub heading "Winter is Coming" he lists all the potential replacements for Gagai - Hunt, DeCourcey etc - but says many are saying Toby Winter is looking good for the spot.

I do wonder how much of Toohey’s comments around not having the $$$ and Barnett’s agents comments about fielding calls from the Broncos and Eels is just games with each other to find the right price

Does say Knights already know they won't be winning a bidding war for Barnett if the decision comes down to money. Also says the biggest problem he had with the club is now gone (AOB).

Maybe he'll believe he can help instil the success he's had since leaving back here but my gut feeling is he'll look for a club that he knows will be there or thereabouts with or without him, and couldn't blame him if he does go that route. Also couldn't blame the Knights for not wanting to move heaven and earth for a 32y/o coming off an torn ACL with a long history of other injuries, too. Was only a year or two ago he was looking at medical retirement with a bad neck.
