Toohey's News

Letting go of players requires someone wanting to take them off your hands. Also beyond time to stop giving Jones the "young, developing" excuse - he's 26 and a fringe first grader on a good day. Went really well on the weekend though, has been due for a few years.

Wonder who the Super Rugby winger is. I took it as him being Kiwi as well because it was lumped in with the Tyrone story but other than that Toohey doesn't actually indicate where he's from at any point in the article so might not be.

I’m really hoping it’s one of the young guys out of the Dura. How good would it be to have another Aku Uate on the wing.

I don't see why we don't move on Elliott imo, Croker is a much younger and cheaper version of and maybe even better. Plays with more heart and is a lot better in the little effort areas.... is also a KNIGHTS junior which works in his favour imo

Jones has never let anyone down when having to fill holes in first grade, does a job everytime and is on minimal coin, logical to re sign him and is also a local junior

Moving Elliott on would probably be a good move for the club. But it's miles off to say Croker is a better version of him. They can both play 13, but we ask Elliott to do so much more for our attack as a link man through the middle because he's a much more skilled player.

You can be upset he doesn't do the job we ask of him as well as a Yeo if you'd like - but we ask him to try and replicate a similar role because he's talented and smart. You could switch him out for Croker on the cheap, but it would require a fundamental change to our structures because Croker just doesn't have the skillset.

I’m with you HVG. I think it was the Broncs. We got pumped through the middle. Elliot didn’t play. Can no body see he sures up the middle defensively. Has good line speed and good contact.

In attacked he has the option of hitting the line hard or has a pass in him. Can work as a link man. Sure he’s had some ****ups. He’s no Yeo. But that takes a lot of skill. We have no player close to him that can do that.

I think the longer the season has gone on the better Elliot has played. So many times early this year I would get mad because he would run on to the ball and then stand still and pass. I also think he throws a lot of horrible short passes.
In saying that I really do like his effort and I enjoy watching him as a player I just want him to run the ball a bit more.

Elliot is down on tackle busts and post contact meters from his pre-Knights times. I genuinely can’t remember him busting through the line once despite all the hit ups that he makes.
He used to play on the edge a fair bit which probably factors in there.

Post-groin injury he has definitely lost a chunk of explosiveness, wouldn't play him on the edge these days. His strength is more accumulation and setting shape now.

Ponga had a review with Blake Green who told him he hadn't established himself amongst the elite playmakers of the game and Ponga has been taking every chance to be a playmaker since.

40 staff and players will do a training session at Newcastle today before taking a chartered flight to Townsville and doing a captains run tomorrow.

Former Knights assistant coach Rohan Smith has been linked to a fulltime role with the Knights junior pathways - essentially Dobson's previous role. He has previously worked with Warriors, Knights, Penrith, Titans, Roosters, and as head coach of Bradford and Leeds. (I've heard a different name, so maybe they are still interviewing for the position).

Toohey says putting the NRLW game on after the main game was bad for a number of reasons.

Interesting point about Ponga being an elite “play maker”. I’m trying to to think of other fullbacks in the comp that are like an extra half. Scotty Drinkwater?

I would say most of the full backs ie, Teddy, Edward’s, Turbo are more running threats, linking up with outside backs or just great support players (traditional FB). Ponga is unquie in he is often second receiver. But also has the running threat.

Which has got me thinking about our halves situation and why perhaps Phoniex is working well atm. He either gets Ponga early ball or just runs it most of the time.

So we have a bit of a unique structure we’re Ponga is almost like a 6 and FB, probably quite different to most of the other sides.
