Toohey's News

4/9

With Tuala and Randall joining the top 30 for next year and us still being in the market for a second rower and another outside back (God knows why), we only have one spot left with Crossland, Johns and Hoy all a chance to get that spot.
We only have 4 development spots and they are all filled, but Toohey doesn't say who has got them - although he does say Randall and Johns come off development contracts to either be signed or let go.
If Edrick Lee is fit he will get the outside back position, or we will buy someone new to go with our other 9 or 10 outside backs.
Shibasaki was on 300k and there is some relief that he finally got his Japanese Rugby deal done because his money is already spent.

Seibold has a new job working for Eddy Jones in the English Rugby Union set up. The club are on the lookout for a replacement.

Hayden Knowles got his start under Michael Hagan at Parramatta, and was highly recommended to the Knights by Hagan. Cupples is still contracted for next year, but it's not clear what his role is now.

Blake Green is no longer coaching the NRLW side. He will be a halves coach across the grades now.

I can only count 24 signed, plus Randall and Tuala, unless the Raiders rugby bloke is on a top 30 deal?

I would be very disappointed if we don’t re-sign Phoenix Crossland.

Since the NRL moved to a top 30 I don't think we've ever started a season with all 30 spots filled, so it looks highly unlikely he'll have a deal come March next year.
Maybe if he doesn't find a spot somewhere else he could nab that 30th spot later on in 2022 if we don't find anyone better. But he should be looking after his career is he wants to be a professional footballer, and signing Clifford then Clune is a giant neon sign that says we don't rate you that highly.

Toohey says 3 of 4 development spots filled.
Yes, I misread that.
We have a development spot that I suppose we could give to Crossland, Johns or Hoy, as well as a top 30 spot. The tone of the Toohey article seems to be that Hoy is the most likely to be cut, so maybe he thinks we will squeeze the other two in.

Any mention of how much money there is for the outside back and 2nd rower?

No, but the implication is they would be better than we have now, so on a better paycheck than say Fitz and Hunt as a minimum.
Thanks Billy.
So potentially some cash to splash.
Or possibly one would be expensive and one would be cheap.
Hopefully we get a good left edge backrower.
And if Lee is fit and we resign I imagine he would be cheap.

I hope Croker got a development spot
It wouldn't be the end of the world if he and Hoy and some of the other young guys like Talty and Lucas had to spend a year in the part time squad.
They could still do a full pre-season and spend a year playing reserve grade. Randall did that for 2 or 3 years and Fitz and King have had to do that for a year I think. Zac Hosking does it year after year and I think he'd slot into firstgrade if he ever got a chance.

That's true, and it is closer to how Melbourne develope their players. Not a bad thing.

Unless contracts change Garret Smith, Christian Ma’anaima, the new guy from Manly Krystan Mapapalangi would be our 3 development currently contracted for next year.
Then there is Dan Ticehurst who was rumoured to have a development deal but was never listed, then guys like Dylan Lucas,Mackenzie Baker etc who impressed in cup who could be offered maybe also.

I think Randall will be a swap with Watson in top 30, and Adam Clune will have taken one of Hoy or Crossland spot.

I had high hopes for Tex to become a great player, he still has the time, but it was a disappointing season from him in the time he ended up with. I hope we’ve used the development deals wisely because the last ones were questionable. Crokes would be the first I’d choose.

I also hope the club retains Phoenix. I can definitely see an NRL standard player in him, a bit of time given of to him in his natural position wouldn’t hurt. He’s a half not a hooker or a lock or whatever.
