The pre-season thread - 2022

Farrar camp cancelled because a "substantial" number of players have covid.

To be honest - I think if the fit young players are at least double vaccinated and all manage to get a mild dose of Omicron - it might be our best way out of this.
Once they've had it, they've had it, and they can get on with training - hopefully without too many long term effects.
People can get covid multiple times though, so I don't know if it's necessarily a good thing.

It's not very common, and I think it's usually a different variant, so we should be good to go for Omicron.

The A league (obviously not the same but) have postponed two games in a row due to covid. Nrl is going to have to figure out a way to negotiate this situation.
Maybe keep the reserves training separately so if there is an outbreak there is a squad of youngsters to jump in.

Just hoping it doesn’t move to qld again, I at least need some home games to look forward too.

The competition is going to be farcical if we are seeing an NRL squad line up against NRL team B-grade with any regularity.

This could mean we're a realistic chance of winning.

Just kidding, we won't be. But will be interesting seeing if things even out a bit. I'm predicting the scorelines will be crazy high.

Lol, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if we lost to a teams B side tbh with the way we drop in form.

Not much that can be done about it really. In a global pandemic, professional sports take a back seat as with everything. But I choose to look at it as an exciting thing, a lot of new young, fresh talent will get an opportunity in the big time & already have been in these last few years. Teams that otherwise may not have, will get the chance to snatch a comp through circumstance. Once some time has passed & these few years are confined to memory only, professional sports running smoothly again with no interuption, we will look back on all this as one strange little blip in normality.

Some guys like Jaron Purcell, Dan Ticehurst, Mitch Black, Dylan Lucas, Mat Croker should be going hard at training to maybe grab a chance to impress next year.

Do we know if Omicron re-infects easily?

I was reading about a new variant today but that one appears to not spread very quickly.

A mate sent me this yesterday, if true the nrl have put their foot down to keep the season on track.

I seriously think the best thing we can do for our season, more important than signing a half is telling everyone to get Covid now and a booster in April. Having your top squad out there might make a huge difference if others are struck down with Covid

The legal ramifications of telling the players to get covid could bankrupt the club if someone got a bad case which was career ending - or god forbid - even life ending.
Nothing the club could do if they told them to take every possible pre caution and they went out and got covid anyway.

maybe but NSW health has pre much told required staff to still turn up even if testing postive if they’re asymptomatic. Essentially willingly risking spreading it to other staff and patients

So the 5 players I think will improve most this off season;

1 Dom Young - He has all the natural gifts and he learnt a lot in his first off season. By all reports he has been ripping into training.

2 Jake Clifford - In his first year he was a lot better in a lot of areas than I thought he'd be - defence, fitness, running game - but there was little sign of the inspired playmaking we thought he would bring. I think that was because he hadn't trained or played with the side. I'm really looking forward to seeing how he goes after a full offseason with the spine and with Johns working on his skills.

3 Simi Sasagi - Everyone wants to see what he can do. We've seen glimpses and he looks to be a exciting prospect.

4 Kalyn Ponga - He changed his game a lot last year and I think Johns will have massive plans for him. I really can't think how he will change up his game, but I know he will.

5 Controversial one - Enari Tuala - He's pretty young still and he's been steadily improving since he joined us. He was one of our best last year - which seemed a bit lucky - but you make your own luck. I think he will step up again.
