The Official Super League Thread

All the ex Knights going well as far as i can see so far! I watched the Bulls play Hull KR on Saturday gone, and Mika had a good game especially in the first half, Lulia was absolutely different class!

in last nights TV game between Wigan and Hull KR, a certain Shannon McDonnell clattered into ref Phil Bentham and broke the refs leg!!!!!

Sort of funny at the time of watching but obviously not very funny for Mr Bentham.......

I am proud to announce that...... Ben Cross has finally scored his first ever try in first-grade yesterday!

Widnes Vikings forward Ben Cross reveals delight at scoring first try of his professional rugby league career

BEN CROSS has revealed his delight at scoring the first-ever try of his professional rugby league career as Widnes ended their eight-match losing streak in stunning style.

Having never crossed the line in 124 previous appearances, the 33-year-old Aussie prop touched down Paul McShane’s first-half grubber kick to help the Vikings on the way to only their third win of the Super League season at home to high-flying Huddersfield.

Cross is a former Australian Grand Final winner with Melbourne Storm, and has also played State of Origin rugby for New South Wales, but revealed he will remember Sunday as one of the greatest days in his career.

He said: “It was great to finally get the monkey off my back.

“Hopefully people can see there is more to my game than just scoring tries but I won’t lie, it was a fantastic feeling.

“I think everybody could see how much it meant to me in my celebration, hopefully it will be the first of a few more.

“It was really funny because for some reason I had told my daughter in the morning before the match that I would do my best to score for her. Obviously I don’t do that every week because I would have a very disappointed little girl!

“A few of the lads have been giving me a bit of stick saying it shouldn’t have been given but I can assure you that I got that much downwards pressure on the ball I nearly broke all four fingers!

“It’s on the record now anyway, nobody can take that away from me, and to score in a win like that makes it all the more sweeter.

“We have been on the receiving end of some pretty embarrassing score-lines this year, probably none more so than away at Huddersfield earlier in the year, so it was great to be able to give something back to the fans, who have shown fantastic support in some pretty difficult times.

Vikings boss Denis Betts was delighted with the veteran forward’s contribution.

Betts said: “I’ve never seen anybody react like that to scoring a try in my life. Everyone was walking away and he was still there whooping and hollering, he was pretty excited.

After the jubilation that followed Sunday’s victory, Cross says it is vital that he and his teammates follow it up with another win against London Broncos at the Twickenham Stoop on Saturday afternoon (3pm).

The Vikings are without a win on their travels so far this season, something that Cross is eager to put right.

He added: “The most important thing now is that we back it up with another big performance on the weekend.

“Everyone knows we have struggled on the road all season but we need to get rid of that mentality.

“It is no good taking a step forward then two back.

Last weekend Widnes leapfrogged the Broncos to leave the London club rooted to the foot of the table.

Earlier this season, Betts’ men beat the Broncos 38-30 in a thrilling encounter at the Stobart Stadium Halton.

But this week Betts has been dealt yet another selection headache in the half-backs, with both Joe Mellor and Danny Craven ruled out through suspension.

Meanwhile, Cross has revealed that he wants to carry on playing for one more season and has told the club that if there is an offer on the table he would love to end his career with the Vikings.

He said: “I am really enjoying my time here in Widnes.

“Of course things haven’t always gone the way we would have liked on the pitch but behind the scenes you can really see that something big is building here and it is great to be a part of.

“I have had a couple of offers to go and play my last year back in Australia, a few English clubs have shown interest too, but I have told the club I would like to stay here so we will see what happens.”

Good on the big man, later on that night he'd probably run 90m to score it. Even better, Wigan put 50 on Leeds on the weekend.

Bradford Bulls go into administration

Bradford Bulls have gone into administration and have just 10 days to avoid being liquidated, it was announced this morning.

Brendan Guilfoyle and Chris White, from insolvency firm The P&A Partnership, have been appointed joint administrators of the Super League club after it failed to find new investment to pay off crippling debts.

Guilfoyle said: "We now have just 10 working days to save the club from liquidation because there are no funds to carry on longer.

"If there is anyone interested in buying the Bulls then we need to hear from them right now because this famous club is now on the brink of extinction."

The Bulls directors filed a notice of intention to enter administration on June 13 in order to buy them more time to find investment, with HM Revenue & Customs threatening to wind up the club over unpaid tax, and the moratorium ended yesterday.

Fans rallied around earlier this year, responding to a plea from former chairman Peter Hood by raising around £500,000 in a fortnight to pay bills after the bank cut the club's overdraft facilities, but Guilfoyle revealed recently that a further £1.2million was still needed to safeguard the club's future until the end of the season.

It is understood Bradford currently owes £98,000 in PAYE tax from May and the same amount for June, plus an outstanding VAT bill of £250,000 from the sale of the Odsal lease to the RFL, while the monthly wage bill is over £200,000.

Guilfoyle, who was at Odsal to break the news of the administration to employees, added: "The directors made every effort to try to save the club within the 14-day timescale issued by the courts but the moratorium ended yesterday without any potential buyer coming forward."

Guilfoyle, who has been involved in the administrations of Leeds United plc, Luton Town, Crystal Palace and Plymouth Argyle, was brought in by the Bradford board to conduct an independent financial review following the departure of Hood and co-director Andrew Bennett.

Bradford are the third Super League club to enter administration in the last two years.

Wrexham-based Crusaders went into administration in November 2010 after struggling to pay off inherited debt and, although they were readmitted to the league a month later, they were liquidated at the end of the 2011 season.

Wakefield spent a week in the hands of an administrator on the eve of last season - and saw three players sold to pay off debts in that time - before local businessman Andrew Glover completed a successful takeover.

Both clubs started the season on minus four points as their punishment for breaching the RFL's rules on insolvency, a fate that now looks to await Bradford.

Gee you'd be spewing if you were Keith Lulia!

Weren't Bradford a powerhouse only a few years back?

How great would it be if there was a ESL Knights side based in Newcastle, England.

I know Catalans is getting there.

Bradford bulls have been given 10 working days to pay off their debts, otherwise they will be forced to fold. They have asked anybody who may be able to help them to please come forward and help their debt of $1.9 AUmillion.
Sorry guys i don't have a link but its on nrl.com.
And as someone else mentioned, Jamie Peacock is retiring from international rugby league, but signed a new 2 year contract with his current club.

Very sad for Bradford, and I hope a buyer does come in. If not ... bring back Lulia!!!

That's real surprising about Peacock, as well. Only a year and a bit out from the next world cup, and he's been such a powerhouse for them for so long. Anybody got any ideas on who would take over the captaincy?

I suppose it would have to be a UK based player.

I think since Gareth Ellis is going back to Superleague next year it may well be him, but they will need to find an interim captain for the second Exiles match.

Well Jon Wilkin captained them in the abysmal game against the Exiles last night but i would imagine James Graham might be the new captain!

Not sure if people have heard but Tony Greenshields signed a one-year-deal with The Nth Qld Cowboys. (I think his name is Tony Greenshields.)
And also David Fa'alogo has signed with us for 1 year and Wayne Bennett said depending on his performance next year then he might extend his contract until end of 2014 season.
