The conference system?

The good thing about one conference being far flung is that everyone in the conference would have to travel a lot, so everyone is in the same boat. The two Brisbane sides and the Titans might get it a bit easier with an extra 2 away games each where they could sleep in their own beds.

The only thing I don't like is the semi finals all being "in conference" so the grandfinal would have a sydney side. I'd like to see cross conference finals so the best two sides could make it if they were both from the same conference.

Yep that would make the most sense. Finals should be mixed from week one so as many Grand Final combos are possible as ... possible.
 
If my maths is right, just over a third of games will be cross conference during the season.
If they spread them across the season, that means 3 out of 9 games each week will be cross conference.
Maybe they could make magic rounds all cross conference games and have 1 in Brisbane and 1 in Sydney.
That would cut down the number of cross conference games in normal rounds.
