The Brian Smith Appreciation Thread

Smiths doing pretty good this year!
I now rate him over Hagan & can see some of the stupid things hagan did to our club.

Yea. We have to remember that he was the coach in 2001.

I guess the team just grew to be too dependent on Johns, i guess thats where Hagan went wrong.

He was/is the word's greatest ever player. Johns was a law unto himself and probably made a lot of the players around him look better than they really were, thus when he wasn't there, they played like ****.

he won us a priemership didnt he?

Not really, he inherited one of the best drilled teams in the comp from three years under Warren Ryan, not to mention the worlds best player guiding them around on the field.
You may have possibly noticed, that the Knights steadily went downhill after 2001 during Hagans years, as the Eels are at present.
Hagan had bugger all to do with the Knights winning the 2001 premiership.

Yes we won a premiership. It was all good until about 2003. All the good work took its toll when the team relied too much on Johns. Smith has turned that around though. Two totally different types of coaches.

Yes i know who warren ryan is if i remember clearly he had massive issues with players!!
Hagan did a great job in 01 !!
He isnt the greatest coach now but with hages coaching in 01 our season could have blown away

It was two years with Ryan, 1999 and 2000. And before that, another hard taskmaster in Mal Reilly. Reilly used to criticise the team after they put teams like Gold Coast away by 40 hahaha.

I'm with you Zephr, our squad and our performance fell away under Hagan, even in 2001 we were the worst defensive team ever to win the competition.

The same could be said of Smith. Ryan told it how it was and didn't sugarcoat it. It might not make him popular, but he was there to improve the players and win games, if he crushed some egos in the process then so-be-it.

Ryan was from the old school, if the coach yelled at you alot then, you just bit your lip and didn't whine to anyone like a baby.
He wasn't a good people person I guess, but he was in a lot of other respects a damn good coach, especially with defence, and he drilled the Knights in it mercilessly for two years, and before him was Reilly another tough *******, so by the time the affable likable Hages came in, he had at his disposal one of the best teams ever seen in the NRL.
I could have probably coached that year and they would have won.
Hagan did jack****, he isnt a coaches arsehole, he prospered from better mens work, like he did in his first season last year at Parra.
Look at what happenned to the Knights in the following years as Wok and Mals good work slowly slipped away, and Hagans slackness and apathy took over, look at Parra now.

i cant remember who said it, but they said that Joey basically ran the team, hagan sat back and did bugger all. dont get me wrong, i think hes ok, but he's not a top caliber coach hes made up to be

Everyone says it it's common knowledge Johns ran the team and Hagan watched we didn't need a coach when Joey was in the side

We had a good team in 01, but what about the years we got flogged continously, & the year we got the spoon & lost 13 or 14 in a row.
13 in a row, in 2005. Johns did miss a fair few games through injury again.
It was the year he played his last SoO series, and dominated that game in Sydney and got MoM. I was there ;)
