Tevita Pangai Jnr

Spoke the Garth Brennan today at the country rugby league grand final. He says newcastle and Penrith have the best junior system talent wise which is easy to see from anyone's view. Also said tpj would be a good pick up for newcastle if someone can get a rocket up him. He was watching Chad Redman play..... I thought he was the one that shafted him? Or was that Neil Henry?

The danger with paying overs for Pangai or any other player is that someone like Dan, equal or better, will require an upgrade if we wish to retain them. I agree that our young forwards need help from a older and experienced player but we have tried that unsuccessfully for 2-3 years and Dan, JSaf and others are not getting any younger. Think we should get best available and bank on them all or most coming good but we cannot have players of same ability and experience being paid a large variance in contract. Think Esee Esee, not the most experienced player when signed but played strong most if not all this season, 2-3 of him wouldn't hurt.

I agree

Disagree.

If you can add a talent like TPJ and have the money to do so, you do it.

Daniel Saifiti isn’t the player TPJ is. I like DS and his potential, but I was expected a big jump from him this season and the first half of the year he was very disappointing with him only coming good the back half. Even at his best (what he’s shown thus far), it’s not close to being TPJ’s best. DS has the potential to be a very good front rower, meanwhile TPJ has the potential (and has flashed it more than DS) to be one of the best forwards in the game. I don’t think they’re comparable right now.

As for Ese Ese, he looked like a good young player at Brisbane and improved while here. He ended up being a good value buy despite us probably having to pay overs at the time. Who’s the next Ese Ese though? If you’re constantly looking at mid tier signings like that, you’ll likely end up being a mid tier team IMO.

Not everyone will outperform their contract. Granted, TPJ migh not live up to his big contract, but the talent level is certainly there. There’s a reason his asking price is high and teams are chasing. He’s a game changing forward which is rare.

First team Brennan coached at the Knights was an under 16s side and Chad Redman was the captain of the team. He played centre alongside Pat Mat, with Chanel on the wing. The hooker was a kid named Chris Knight, who went with Brennan to Penrith.

People saying we shouldn’t waste our money on TPJ and go for Klemmer, Klemmer isn’t really a viable option he’s under contract and the Dogs will sort his upgrade.

TPJ off contract and he has tournthe facilities, much more realistic.

Except He has said all along he is staying at the Broncs. A lot of water under the bridge between now and November when he can apparently sign and that may work in our favour depending on what happens at the donkeys with Bennett.

On Klemmer, the talk is he is unhappy there, the dogs can't offer him as big an upgrade on the contract as we can offer, especially depending on the retirement decision of Foran. If that decision goes our way they have even less wriggle room. Need to get some third party not connected to the club in his ear with the money we are offering. Not a great way of doing business but no doubt all clubs do it to try and destabilise a player and rip them from a club. Thats business.

A Klemmer type player is exactly what we need experienced, intimidating and proven this is an product worth investing our money in.

TPJ may turn out to be a good player in the future although not subjected to constant scrutiny he is still a gamble on many fronts.

I still think TPJ is more realistic because he is actually off contract.

The Klemmer stuff is all ******** I reckon, The Dogs wouldn't be signing CHN from Penrith if they didn't have Klemmer's deal sorted.

The question of who is better or who we would need more is a different argument all together

From Fox.
Tevita Pangai Junior

Up to five clubs are reportedly chasing the off-contract 22-year-old’s signature, and while he insists he’ll stay loyal to the Broncos, the Red Hill club may not be able to compete with the huge offers expected to roll in from clubs like the Knights.

They have already spent big to retain Matt Gillett, Jamayne Isaako, Payne Haas, David Fifita and Jaydn Su’a, and the powerhouse Tongan international would command at least $800,000 a year.

Also in the Knights’ favour is that Pangai Jnr was a local junior.

Although it seems like it won't happen the talks they offered Corey Oates 800k with the cap issues they are in are surely not true...

Just seems like they went on twitter and scooped up the latest gossip

Agreed.

Oates is a winger and should be paid like one. $800k for any winger is over the top.

If he develops into a quality forward his salary will reflect that, but in time.

Went off on a tangent there :giggle:

It'd be a gamble throwing that amount at Pangai, but if there's room in the cap it's a low risk which could pay off big

It would be a Gamble and contrary to your assessment it has the potential to be a High Risk.

I don't pretend to know anything about "musculoskeletal physiology" but with the rapid development of young big humans, often knees and bones don't have time to develop at a controlled rate and this can lead to problems latter in life.

Now add to that the rigours and impact of a front line NRL forward and there in lies the "high Risk".

Hey I am all for paying big money for front line proven, hardened players but apart from a few good games ( broken up by a spell with Hamstring issues ) TPJ is a long way off $800, unless your on a percentage as his manager.

I am not saying he won't get to $800K sometime in his career, but it would unwise to pay that in his first big outing.

I am not saying TPJ won't be great, but one good season doesn't make a career!
I'd like to see some consistency before I am handing over $800K, especially to a guy who has form for being lazy af!
I think Saulo has the potential to be better than TPJ if managed correctly!
Just sayin'
