New South Wales secure victory in the series opener against Queensland, see how the players fared in the player ratings.




Fullback: Jarryd Hayne - His team needed him at his best and he was. Great try to open the scoring, magnificent in defence - Rating: 8.


Winger: Brett Morris - Little chance to shine in attack, but did his job well on the other side of the ball. - Rating: 7.


Centre: Michael Jennings - Brilliant individual try on the stroke of halftime, speed and strength a constant threat - Rating: 7.


Centre: Josh Morris - Kept Greg Inglis largely in check, brilliant cover tackle in the first half denied Darius Boyd a certain try - Rating: 8.


Wing: Blake Ferguson - Knocked on after first run, but coped admirably with aerial pressure thereafter - Rating: 7.


Five-eighth: James Maloney - Excellent debut, kicked well, ran the ball well, kicked three goals but missed one in front of the posts - Rating: 7.


Halfback: Mitchell Pearce - Did everything expected from him, strong in defence and kicking much improved on previous years - Rating: 7.

2nd Row: Luke Lewis - Outstanding. Ran the ball brilliantly, inside pass set up Hayne's try, always involved. Man of the match - Rating: 9.


2nd Row: Ryan Hoffman - Workmanlike as ever. Did his job in his usual unfussy way - Rating: 7.


Lock: Greg Bird - Made a vital one-on-one steal on Sam Thaiday late on when Queensland were in good territory. Born for Origin - Rating: 8.

Andrew Fifita - Impressive debut. Bent the line with his first run and looked well at home in the cauldron-like environment - Rating: 8.


Trent Merrin - Solid when called upon. Put Cameron Smith on his back following a strong run - Rating: 7.

Sure, we finally have a great game and a great team, and win, so lets change the most important position in the team, because we haven't done that for the last 7 years without results
 
As predicted QLD's bench was p*ss poor and didn't provide any impact at all. Didn't even realise any of their bench players when they got on the field. NSW never looked like losing, QLD were just luck that we didn't go on with it in the second half. We were in cruise control.

I've got to disagree. Such a relief to not have Uate on that wing - Fergo never looked unsafe under the high ball. The first carry mistake was unfortunate, but he seemed to learn his lesson after that.

Calm down mate, he's just saying Pearce still isn't up to standard. The team shouldn't be changed, but that doesn't hide the fact that Pearce is still not good enough. Halfback should be one of your best players, and sadly he is one of our weak links.

No no, I didn't say change him... I just said he's not what the media make him out to be... Sure he's solid in defence but attack his zip. Maloney played good both attack and in defence... However our forwards won that game... I just expect a lot more from the NSW half back! That's all...

OLYMPIC gold medallist Jessicah Schipper has lashed out at NSW captain Paul Gallen and ex-Blues legend Andrew Johns following their Origin I victory tonight.


Proud Queenslander Schipper was less than impressed with the actions of Gallen, who was put on report for a hit on Maroons forward Nate Myles, which he followed up with a flurry of punches.And Schipper didn't confine her disgust with the NSW captain, also slamming Johns as he interviewed Gallen after the game for Channel 9."Now we have a grub talking to a drugo love the @NSWRL," Schipper tweeted.She also tweeted back to a follower: "should know better. Andrew johns is self confessed ecstasy user gallen is a grub facts are facts.

Bet she was happy when Tate landed one on Bird in the decider last year though.
 
Gotta love it when Queensland have a whinge, mind you they forget Tate's dog shot on Bird last year. Atleast Gallen hit him front on after Myles pushed him first, not Gallen's fault he was up against a dumbarse who didn't keep his guard up. Whinging is in their blood. Schipper might find herself in trouble with those tweets.

And I don't know why people are saying Gallen king hit Myles...it was face to face 1 on 1 in the punch up and the hit it the tackle wasn't that bad...didn't seem to hurt Myles at all

It was also referred to as a dog act.... which imo it wasn't...Myles had a chance to fight back...

IT has become as much a part of Origin tradition as the softening up period, the war of words and the invective thrown at the NSW halfback - Phil Gould's inspirational oratory right before kick-off.


But it has been revealed that broadcaster Channel 9 has decided to dump Gould's signature pre-match speech for tonight's fiery series opener at ANZ Stadium.Asked on Sky Sports Radio's Big Sports Breakfast this morning if he looked forward to looking down the barrel of the camera, in the shadows of the posts, on the game's grandest stage, Gould said: "Er, we're not doing it this year."A call to Nine revealed the network had decided to take a different tack after using Gould - the most successful NSW coach in Origin history - as part of its pre-match ritual for several years.

"We think after a few years that it's time for a change," Nine's executive producer of rugby league Matt Callander said. "We will still be using Gus in some capacity though. Why wouldn't we?"Instead, Gould will be using the network's new Nine Orbit and virtual studio technology to highlight what it means to be an Origin player, with a particular emphasis on Queensland playmaker Johnathan Thurston.Gould's impassioned speeches have been done off the top of his head for several series now.

He has done it in driving rain at ANZ Stadium and before roaring crowds at Suncorp Stadium.

OLYMPIC gold medallist Jessicah Schipper has apologised for her Twitter tirade during last night's State of Origin match in which she took aim at NSW captain Paul Gallen and ex-Blues legend Andrew Johns.


Schipper, upset that Gallen was allowed to stay on the field after landing punches on Maroons forward Nate Myles, took to social media to vent her frustration as Johns interviewed the skipper on the sideline.

But today she has apologised.

Schipper wasn't the only celebrity or sporting legend to fire up on Twitter following the Gallen controversy.Channel 9's most famous Queenslander, Karl Stefanovic called Gallen a "dog".

QUEENSLAND great Wally Lewis says referee Ashley Klein is not up to Origin standard as the fallout from the Paul Gallen fight-night saga continued today.

Whistleblowers Klein and Shayne Hayne have come under fire for failing to take sterner action against Gallen, who rocked Queensland rival Nate Myles with a flurry of punches in NSW's 14-6 victory in Origin I last night.

Gallen was reported for his 39th minute attack on Myles and later levelled with a grade two striking charge, which will see him banned for one week if he submits an early guilty plea.

Maroons coach Mal Meninga believed Gallen deserved to at least be sin-binned and Lewis blasted Klein's general performance on a night where the Blues benefited from a number of contentious calls.

"Everything went right for the Blues early, even the things that were wrong went right for them," he said.

"Even the howler at the start (when Brent Tate was ruled to have knocked-on from a bomb he didn't touch), I was just gobsmacked.

"The incident where the ball went up and he (Klein) called Tate for a knock on, he didn't even get close to it.

"Quite a few people said to me before the game, 'have you guys blown up about the appointment of one of these referees?'

"This game told the story.

"My jaw hit the floor the other day when his name (Klein's) was announced.

"I don't remember his name being listed in the top six referees in the NRL.

"I won't name him but I think we all know who I am talking about. The other one (Hayne) is among the top two or three but how the other bloke was appointed for an Origin game is beyond me."

Have to agree Klein should never have been picked but to say Gallen deserved to get sin binned is a joke!
 
I think he definitely deserved the sin bin if we're going by today's rules! He swung his arm into a guy's head then after the tackle punched the same guy 4 times in the head!

Saying that i'm glad they didn't because it was good for the game & it is Origin, they should let stuff like that be gotten away with in that arena.
