Sione Mata'utia and Beau Scott in the Australian squad

And all you people who are comparing his size to Inglis or his Speed to Boyd are absolutely joking

And Gidley in his prime would have been a few lengths ahead of Sione. People are quick to forget the sort of athlete Gids was in his younger years

Has Boyd ever been blistering quick? He's not slow by any means, but I wouldn't really classify him as a speedster.

Gidley was a great player in his prime but he's never been that quick. Above average yes, but his speed certainly wasn't the main factor in what made him a very good fullback.

Yeah sweet, Gids was never a speedster

But Boyd is deceivingly quick. He'd be quicker and more agile than nearly every back in the comp. He's a freak, not sure why that Is even up for debate?

He'd be equal to Mamo and probably faster than Uate in being measured against the rest of our squad

No one compared his size to Inglis? I just said with a bit growing I can imagine him being the size of Inglis when he's fully grown, I'm not saying he will be but just that I could totally see it.

We never seen him flat out at the Knights so it's hard to judge how fast he is. Going by how quick he lobbed aboard a yacht on the other side of the World I'd say his pace is deceptive.

Well he scored 7 tries in 7 games of firstgrade as an 18 year old - he must do something right.
He has also scored nearly a try a game in under 20s as a 17 year old - and scored 11 tries in 9 games of under 16s to top the season tryscoring for the comp as a 14 year old.
In his second year of Mathews he was injured most of the season but came back for the finals and scored 6 tries in 3 games including 3 in the grandfinal.
In his one season of Ball he was mostly injured and played short minutes, but still scored heaps of tries, and ended that season in Under 20s (as soon as he turned 17).

Haha yeah look I'm not trying to play down his potential, I'd pick the bloke before McManus, Gagai and probably Uate in our backline

The ability to be tackled is a size thing for Sione at the moment I think. He is obviously very small at the moment being a teenager, with a couple of years of professional NRL training along with the natural growing of a 18-year old body to a 20+ year old body he should be able to get bigger & become a bit more a threat to the line.

Yeah, but he bigger he gets the slower he's going to become.
He's going to turn out to be Boyd more than anyone else if he was going to play fullback. Not much threat to the line, but could set up a try or two in set plays.

Some people seem to think he might have peaked at 18.
Following the juniors, a hell of a lot of players do peak at 18 - just when girls and drugs and alcohol enter their lives in a serious way - and they have to decide between work and football.

But I have to say, all his brothers are still improving. Pete is 24 and getting better every year. Chanel is 22 and made a huge leap forward this year. His game for NSW residents was amazing, and his firstgrade games were pretty good too. Pat is 21 and improved in leaps and bounds this year.

All the evidence says the Mataútia boys keep improving well into their 20s.

Pete has been in first grade for four years.
Has played less than 20 first grade games.
Must be improving very slowly.

Most of his games were this year, and Saints wouldn't let him out of the second year of his contract because he is in their firstgrade plans - that's improvement.

Yeah the Dragons are in trouble salary cap troubles.
They trying to offload Beale and Farrell.
Pete is on peanuts.

Yeah it's an improvement.. from **** to not so **** but still dog average.

He probably would have played a lot more if not for the fractured larynx.
There was not much wrong with the firstgrade games he played in 2011 and 2012, but it took all of 2013 to get back to where he was after missing a lot of time training because of the fractured larynx.
It took half a season to settle in at Saints, but he has been a regular firstgrader at the end of the season and goes into next year as a firstgrader.

Yeah not much wrong. you must have missed that night he played fullback against the Raiders?
He was ****house x 1000000000000000

I remember him being pretty good for us vs the roosters when I went out to watch him. Must have been 2011

The one attribute I really like about Sione is how he keeps his legs pumping in contact. He doesn't just hit and take the tackle, he hits and drives and often pokes his head through the tackle, which means he gets a quicker play the ball. Really important trait for outside backs who do a lot of dummy half running early in sets. Quite reminiscent of Uate in that regard.

Sione Mata'utia

Australia’s youngest ever Test player did pretty much what we all hoped and expected, showing his undoubted talent and inexperience in equal measure.

Against England, he wrote his name in the history books and let in a try to his opposite number Ryan Hall when he got caught out of position, although he did well to diffuse a Gareth Widdop bomb as the English pushed hard for a result late in the game.

The teenager — and let’s not forget that — played only his second game for Australia in the Four Nations final but he was always going to struggle going up against Manu Vatuvei.

There was little he could do to stop The Beast’s two tries but he still bagged one for himself, helped set up Ben Hunt’s four-pointer late on, and very nearly scored the equaliser in the final minute.

A true baptism of fire but plenty to suggest this could be the start of something beautiful.
