Sione - I Don't see the big fuss?

Welcome to the forum!!!

I have to say I totally agree with you as I haven't seen anything spectacular from him yet.

I know he is young and will take time but I don't understand playing him out of position just to make the squad.

He needs more time in nsw cup playing his preferred position.

Agreed Sheens was going for a popcorn headline by picking him for Australia even with the injuries.

He will be good, wether he'll be great I am not convinced.

He is only 18 guys! Give him two or three years, muscle up and see him as a great backrower. Remember that is how Beau Scott started when he was first with St. George Illawarra.

And to be fair he made the Kangoaroos in what was a very poor team with so many backs unavailable.

Now they Gagai has re-signed... where does that leave Sione for the next two years?
We won't score many tries with him at fullback.
Maybe he's going to develop into a backrower?

Agreed ^^^ He wont have to defend in the line, and he looks best in broken play. It's about time we had a fullback with the ability to break the line on his own.

Don't think cut and paste has the vision to see Gagai at 5/8 or fullback, Sione to replace Jimmie Mac and let's try Carlos T also with Mullo to No. 7. Heaven knows one try in three hours play we gotta try something!

Not Carlos ew, Randell for daysss

Hey fellas! Thought I'd finally join up to get opinions on teenage sensation Sione Mata'utia.
Every week on the Knights Facebook page I read comments on how Sione should play fullback over Gidley. IMO we have looked a lot better with Gidley in the one.
Am I missing something with Sione? I know he's young and playing out of position but I am yet to see anything amazing from him that screams superstar. Usually young gun players show at least something to make you stand up and take notice. Fullback is also one of those positions where you get more space to show what you got. I don't know? Am I expecting too much too soon?
I know he made all the rep teams but I'm little disappointed so far.

His team mates made a big fuss of him when he pushed off 2 toads to score under the posts -this is a taste of what he is capable of.

We would look a lot better with Gidley wearing the one jersey of the NSW Cup team.

He was setup by Roberts, he didn't break the line himself.
80% of outside backs would've scored that try yesterday.
See what I mean though... You're making a big fuss of something that wasn't anything special.

He should not have scored, one of the guys he pushed off was Thurston. The pressure was on and Sione performed.

Gidley made hard work out of stopping a kick, then Thurston sole the ball from him in a one on one tackle and the Cowboys scored in the next play - one try conceded . Morgan easily stepped around Kurt and scored - two tries conceded. Kurt also knocked on a routine kick off and a ball at first receiver and both these errors were made when the Knights had a chance to win the game.

Yeh although he bumped off the worst defender in the comp in Thurston, it was still a great try. Like, Thurston is weak as **** but it still showed good strength by sione

Well one of the Mataútia's was named for Samoa, along with Carlos and BJ. Alapati (Pat) Mataútia from the Newcastle Knights.
It's a big centre pairing they have gone for - Pat and BJ will push some guys around.

article from noddy saying NEWCASTLE have badly mishandled the emergence of Sione Mata’utia, with his stint in the back row the final straw

In other words Stone has no bloody idea

Noddy has no idea.
The ideal way to handle Sione would have been to drop Gagai or BJ and let him play his best position of centre in every game for 80 minutes.
That was never going to happen, was it?

Very strange decision to pick Pat Mataútia for Samoa now that I think about it.
Fair enough, he has been one of our best in NSW cup for the last 2 weeks, but he started the year with a broken leg in our last trial and even when he came back very early he was playing badly. Even now he looks a bit slower than usual.
He has basically been picked over Pete and Chanel, who both look in very good form to me. I assume Sione is not available for Samoa.

Before anyone goes there, Sione didn't get picked for Country because of an ankle injury he got on the weekend, otherwise he would've been there

As for his try, yeah Roberts make the line break but there is no way Gidley would have supported with that speed and there's no way Gidley would have beat those two defenders that Sione did. Just saying.
