Scott Dureau to return in Super League after tumour scare

FORMER Newcastle NRL halfback Scott Dureau will make his comeback for Catalan Dragons in the Super League this weekend following a major health scare.


The 26-year-old has not played since last September after discovering a tumour behind his eye during a routine test.Dureau, who had surgery in Australia in January, was given the go-ahead to resume full training a month ago after tests showed the operation had been successful.He cleared his final hurdle after attending the neurological surgery department of the Toulouse Rangueil Hospital and Catalan coach Laurent Frayssinous says he'll go straight back into the team to play London Broncos in the opening game of the two-day Super League extravaganza at Manchester's Etihad Stadium.

"This is great news for Scott," said Frayssinous."He went through some very difficult times and he worked hard to come back as soon as possible. He deserves this quick return."Dureau, who was named in the Super League Dream Team in each of his first two seasons with the Dragons, said: "I'm very happy."It's obviously really good news. I was waiting for that decision for a long time."The last five months since the surgery have been very long. I can't wait to be back on the field with my team-mates."

Dureau given all-clear after scare

Former Newcastle NRL halfback Scott Dureau has had another health scare while playing for the Catalans Dragons in the English Super League.
Dureau became distressed while lining up a 60th-minute penalty in the Dragons' 32-all draw with Widnes after complaining of double vision - the symptom which led to him discovering he had a brain tumour last September.

He sat on the ground when he was unable to see the target of the posts and then, when he tried to stand, fell back to the floor.
Medics immediately treated him and he was taken to a nearby hospital but there was later some good news.
"Scott is fine. He got a knock in the game and that gave him a little bit of double vision. It's not connected to what happened before and he's now waiting to get the all clear to go home," a Catalans spokesman said.

It was only Dureau's second match back after discovering the brain tumour.
After his comeback game last week, Dureau spoke of how he had feared for his life when he first found out about the illness, but felt better knowing he had the blessing of his doctor to resume his career.
"I didn't really know what my future held at first; If I would survive the next week let alone play footy again," he said.
"It was a scary time but I'm here now, feeling good as it's been a pretty frustrating and scary five months. It's great to be back amongst the team.
"The tumour was on the left side of my brain. The problem with my eye was that the tumour was pushing behind my eye which caused me a little bit of blurred vision.
"When I came back (from surgery) I could only participate a little in training as it was difficult to see the ball and people coming, that was frustrating and nothing I could do to make it better."
