I put 4 reasons why we have not been able to re-captcha the magic of last year. In order of how things transpired.

1. We lost Fitzgibbon. We all know the combination he had with KP on the left. It was always there for years. It just completely clicked last year with both of them on the field for an extended period of time.
2. The loss of Voldermort. Freak on the right wing, combination with Gags was lethal.
3. The belting from Canberra first game of the year. That set in motion the dreaded AOB ball! You know we are an “ugly team”.
4. The key injuries again this year, Braddy, Gamble and Ponga not being on the field for an extended period to work on combinations.

To add to point 1. Fitzy’s combo with Hastings was really good too. It opened up so much space for KP, Braddy and Greg. KPP is a beast but the combinations haven’t fired in the same way.

Is it not the coaches job to get the best out of the players, deal with underperformance in various ways, motivate the team and provide an environment that fosters these good performances?

We're back to the if only we had better players argument, yet here is the Bulldogs fighting for a top 4 spot! Do they have better players than us do they? Or just better attitudes?

The responsibility lies squarely with the coach. Saying anything else just invites more and more mediocrity to continue.

The players have their responsibility don't get me wrong, but if the players aren't performing, that is on the coach to deal with!
They certainly have better halves. You can't win consistently when ur halves are as bad as ours. You can blame the coach for chopping and changing the halves so much, but at the end of the day none have performed close to well enough to make the jersey their own.

Good point. Comments that KPP should be on the right. Lucus on the left. But yeah Fitzy would have the half bust and shovel the ball off to KP.

We have to remember KPP didn't have an off season here, he started trying to do Fitzys hit and spin and didn't really work a few times so they kind of seemed to just give up. Hoping they can work out an effective way fo utilise him next year in a similar fashion to Fitz.

I think he's his own player, hit and spin doesn't really seem to be his thing, but give him the ball with a bit of space and he'll definitely be able to find an offload.

A lot of the wonderful coaches that have been mentioned would do so much better have failed this year. Ricky and his always solid and competitive Raiders, Hasler who we should have signed when we had the chance, Webster who totally turned the Warriors around, Flanagan who transformed the Dragons … and Ciraldo at the Bulldogs is going downhill too.

I give it to AOB when he gets it wrong, like his crazy calls about attack a while back. But a lot of the supposed far superior coaches get just as inconsistent results, or more-so.

4 out of five seasons in the finals after making (I think) 3 times in the previous thirteen. And it’s now 3 times in the last four seasons where we’ve played our best footy in the back half of the year, when results matter most and other teams are fading instead of rising to the occasion.

I get plenty frustrated with him too (I mean, I started this thread), but I think we have to keep him. He’s gotten more consistent buy-in than any other coach since the glory days, at a club where lack of consistent buy in has been a long term issue, while dealing with a football department still working towards stability with a guy at the top in Gardner who most of us agree is an absolute turkey. Also dealing with a pretty rough injury toll through most of his tenure and a halves combo routinely ranked as the worst in the comp.
