TALKING POINTS
Old Boys Day
It’s traditionally the biggest day on the calendar for Knights fans as well as players, as the Club’s former players attend the game.
The Old Boys will once again form a guard of honour for the team to run out through, while the Club’s illustrious 1997 premiership winning side will make a lap of honour before the game.
It’s a highly emotional afternoon for the current players, who use it as motivation to play at their best.
“It's everyone’s dream to play in an NRL Old Boys Day,” starting prop Josh King said earlier in the week.
“The biggest motivator is that they’re all going to be coming out and watching and you don’t want to let them down because they’re what started the Club.”
The history
Earlier this year the red and blues gave a good account of themselves against the 2016 premiers when they went down 19-18 in Cronulla.
While it was far from a perfect display, the team showed plenty of grit to pull themselves level with the Sharks late on, only to be sunk by a James Maloney field goal before the siren.
It was a different story against the Sharks at home last year, which was a game that no player or fan would want to remember.
The team has come a very long way in its development since then though, and will be fired up to show just how much better they are.
The debutant
The red and blues have had three NRL debutants and six Club debutants so far this season, and in Round 26 another player will be added to their ranks.
Tyrone Amey is a no-nonsense forward in a similar mould to Josh King, who isn’t a massive body but enjoys doing the hard yards.
The team currently has six middle forwards ruled out through injury and that sees Amey get his chance, but he has been working hard in Reserve Grade all year and deserves his chance in the NRL.
“I’m really happy and excited for the opportunity, so I can’t thanks the Knights enough,” Amey said on Thursday.
“I have been doing a lot of hours and it is tough but I want to play footy for a living and I love the game, so I guess chasing your dreams is what motivates you.”
Farewelling players
To add to the already long list of emotional and exciting events on Sunday, fans will also have the opportunity to farewell retiring and departing players after the match.
Players such as Anthony Tupou and Rory Kostjasyn will be calling full time on impressive careers that included premierships, while the Club’s current longest serving player in Dane Gagai will be moving to the Rabbitohs.
There will be on on-field presentation for retiring and departing players immediately following full time and the day concludes when the team make their way around the ground as a final thanks to Members and supporters.
THE FINAL SAY
“Cronulla is a premiership favourite and it would be good to finish the year successfully and also for the development of our younger players,” coach Nathan Brown said on Tuesday.
“We try to make the younger players realise what the Club was built on back in Allan McMahon days, along with Mal Reilly when he won and when (Michael) Hagan won.”
