Former Knights utility forward Regan Tanner made a successful return to Newcastle, scoring two tries in the Central Coast Storms' 42-16 defeat of the Central Newcastle Knights in their Round 16 NSW Cup match.
Coming off a close victory last week against Balmain Ryde the visitors took advantage off a somewhat depleted Knights outfit missing regulars Scott Dureau,Mark Tafua and speedster Akuila Uate to first grade duties.
Central Newcastle was first to open the scoring when Teason Faavele-Eli created opportunity with a one handed offload in the 4th minute to put Con Mika over.
Central Coast responded almost immediately in the 10th minute when Regan Tanner crossed for his first try of the encounter off a crafty inside ball from halfback and captain Alex Moore, to give the Storm a 6-4 advantage.
The Knights looked to play with width early launching a number of raids down the Storms' right edge and with some success until Central Coast winger Grant Nelson made a clever read on a Luke Walsh pass to take an intercept and run 80 metres to get the visitors their second try of the match and hand them a 12-4 lead.
Central Newcastle's defence was tested on a number of occasions and held strong until Troy Woodley jumped on a wild offload from Brad Clarke and barged over to make it 18-4, giving the Coasters' momentum.
The Knights needed salvation and found it in their diminutive number Seven, Luke Walsh when he put in a beautifully weighted grubber for Tanu Wulf to give to take the Knights to 18-10.
The Central Newcastle Knights made a game of it when no nonsense prop Tim Natusch crossed in the 33rd minute after beating two defenders close to the line to go into the break trailing 18-16.
Central Newcastle were unable to maintain their momentum in the second stanza as the Storm forwards made a point of cutting down the Knights time on their fifth tackle options and limiting Walsh's time with their speed off the line.
The Coast forwards got on top of their Newcastle counterparts in the ruck and were able to convert this advantage into points in the 50th minute with a try to Jade Williams and again in the 53rd when Tanner crossed to complete his double.
From here the Storm dominated field position and were able to shut down any genuine scoring attempts from the home side.
Alex Moore controlled the match well with his aggressive kicking game and his attacking short kicks one of which created a try to centre Kirk Thompson late in the second half.
Blake Davey crossed late in thedying minutes to put the visitors into 7th position on the NSW Cup ladder and handing the Knights their 3rd successive defeat.
