Lot's of old players saying Townsend couldn't pull out of the play after the whistle was blown.
Ponga pulled out. He had stopped and relaxed and wasn't even looking, which made it look a lot worse when he was hit by a guy who was going as hard as he could.
So wrap your arms around him and ease him to the ground. It was a reckless shoulder charge on a guy who'd completely relaxed.

The ref called a stop to play sure but Townsend was already launched and couldn’t pull out. It was very reckless but I don’t think he hit him high. Should of been 10 in the bin.

Ponga had time to hear the ref and stop to a stand still. Your absolutely deluded if you think Chad couldn't have pulled out of it, or at the very least, not smashed him as hard.

He was trying to put on a big hit and most likely shut out all sound in the heat of the moment. That doesn't excuse him though. It was reckless, it was very late, and it was a shoulder charge and the send off was warranted.

The match review committee obviously agree.

When you launch and leave your feet like that and shoulder charge you can't be too shocked when you blows up in your face.

Segeyaro did that years ago and was lauded for it. Granted shoulder charges are now banned but he didn’t hit him high. 10 in the bin was sufficient but no way was it a send off in my opinion.

Differing of opinions. Easier to stop with ball in hand but when you’re geared up and already launched into the tackle it’s more difficult.

He didn’t hit him high. Whoever said he broke Ponga nose is off their face. Ponga was evidently already busted up before then.

The match review was already going to go in hard on him because it was a shoulder charge. If it was a seriously bad one he would of been sent straight to the judiciary like Proctor’s case but evidently because of contact not being high he wasn’t.

I think Ponga admitted after the match that he hit his chest. But we all know the code. After the whistle blows you leave it on the pitch. And there’s also the pride of one young bloke letting the other vicious little dweeb know that he never collected him good. Ponga is super cool and hard as nails.

I think it was clearly high and not even subjective. Only bias comes into it hence the differing views from non Knights fans or just pure muppets like Blocker.

I wonder what would happen if Tedesco or Slater got clipped about the head as often as Ponga does?
I think there would be a lot in the press about it, and the refs wouldn't let it happen.
Somehow, it's just become a 'thing' that it's OK to clip Ponga if he steps past you.

I didn't say he hit him high in what you quoted. I don't think he necessarily hit him in the head. But, that doesn't change the fact it was after play had stopped, was an illegal shoulder charge. And was a heavy hit.

Chad must of been thinking gee how nice of Ponga to just stop playing and look off somewhere so I can smash him. Ponga was also in motion but managed to come to a complete stop AND have time to look at the ref, then turn his head back to look at Townsend before he hit him.

For mine, Townsend made the mistake a moment ago and was p!ssed, he was looking to put on a big shot and in his single minded action didn't pay any attention to what was happening around him, or in front of him, or even to make a legal tackle, and smashed Ponga. It was reckless of him to just ignore everything else and smash him deliberately using a shoulder charge. Late, reckless, illegal tackle even in general play. No brainer.

If this isn't a send off, pretty much nothing will be.

Braith said it was vicious which I think encompasses everything that was wrong with it.

And Ponga was still laughing moments after. Hard as nails that boy.

Send offs were also intended for repeated dangerous offences by the same teams and well we all know the Sharks had pulled off multiple dangerous tackles before the one Townsend did.
If the previous multiple dog shots on Ponga weren’t called that one had to be as it was the most blatant and careless one, to get the game under control.

I probably would have been happy with 10 in the bin (asa knights fan was also happy with the send off!) but I would like someone to make a compilation of every time they put a high shot on ponga last night or laid all over him and didn’t get pulled up on it. It was turning into a bit of a joke. Even the broken nose was a completely unnecessary slap in the face.

That’s why I said whoever said he hit him high and broke his nose and not you....

Yep he was geared up and already committed like I said.

Also like I said it was reckless and a shoulder charge. If that’s a send off then the game has lost the plot. If he hits him high then yes a send off comes into the equation.

There is no way in the world someone is getting sent off for that in a big final or rep match.

Ponga saying he got hit on the chest says it all. Same with the review panel only charging him and not sending him straight to the judiciary like every other send off you see.

Who ever says it wasn't late, or he didn't have time to stop, is off their head. The referee had not only blown his whistle, he had also had time to have both hands in the air calling time off before the hit.... And, every other player on the field heard it and had stopped... It was a good-ole-fashioned dog shot!!!!

Can I admit I got a bit emotional at this one? Seeing the forwards playing with vigor and our star fullback come through a battering to score a hat trick, that to me was a top notch effort yesterday against a side that turned up ready to play. We were so, so good. I've been through everything with this team since '88. That yesterday was akin to how our really good sides would win at home. Truly brought a tear to the eye. We are about to get our finals monkey off our back. I'm really looking forward to next Saturday night. As long as we turn up with the same intent for every game from here on in I'll be happy.
