I still find it a little head scratching that people are naming Feeney at fullback. How about letting him play a few games in the position in reserve grade first to see if he's actually capable of it. I agree it looks like he might have the skill set that fits the mould of the modern fullback but until he plays an actual game there, he's an unknown. The extra fitness needed to play fullback is something people may be underestimating.

Well what's the point in playing smith? He's not in our future plans and we aren't exactly in win now mode are we?I get you need veterans to steer but for mine, he can set the standard in nsw cup

Because he's a better footballer than Mataora. I'm all for giving youth a chance but why pick an inferior player. If it was Stockwell or Tapine taking his spot I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Smith gave us everything he had last year in his efforts to earn a new contract, and even trying his hardest, he was still a shadow of his former self.
This year he knows he's not getting another contract, and he's one year older and is now the oldest player in the NRL.
I'll be happy to see him have a good year, but i'm not holding my breath waiting for it.
He's a year older than Clint Newton.

I have no problems with Smith being in the team, he's still hard as nails and still makes attackers pay for running at him, he even produced some great runs last season so he's still got plenty to offer imo. Though I think there will be a point in the season where Brown has no choice but to put in some of the young guys who I have no doubt will be pounding on the door of first grade. He'll be there until Tariq returns and then it'll depend who's in better form, Smith or some of the young forwards.

I really like the look of the Safiti's and they should make very good first graders if they continue in the same direction. But i think some people are being tad over enthusiastic regarding their contribution in the starting 17 in 2016! A solid year in NSW cup and a couple of 1st grade appearances would be an outstanding achievement for both young men!

The quote from Brown yesterday was;
“Whether they play one or two or eight games, we’re not really sure, but they’re definitely kids we think have got a good future in the game."

First time I'd even heard of these guys was just on 1 year ago when I saw a photo from the NYC training camp and wondered who the giant was - and then noticed there were 2 of them.
These guys have had the fastest rise through the grades that I can remember - probably since Tahu I'd say - so any firstgrade they play will be a bonus for us, and we probably have to expect they will have areas of their game where they need a lot of work still, if they make the grade.
Funny that their team mates still know very little about them. Korbin said in an interview that they would enjoy going "home" to play in the 9s, and they were both born in Newcastle and raised on the central coast.

I cant get my head around it. Give the kid atleast 2 months in reserve grade before throwing him in.

Scott Minto anyone?

He was killing it last two months.

Newton and Smith in the same breath. Gee Billy stop and have a think mate. 10% Smith is a 100% more then that nuffy Newtown ever was.

I'm just not a fan of Mamo at fullback at this point and we don't have a centre to cover Gagai going to fullback. Obviously if Feeney is struggling at training and has a shocker in the trial match you wouldn't pick him at fullback but I'm pretty confident that won't be the case. Looks like a genuine fullback to me.

In attack he does but his fitness, ability under the high-ball, positioning from the back, etc, are unknowns at the moment

It's not like Mamo is great at these things either though, all he's really got going for him at this point is fitness and speed*. Whoever we pick is going to be learning as they go, and in my opinion Feeney has more potential for this season as well as long-term.

*Speed he's never shown in first grade

Mamo isn't great in those areas but I've seen worse. He has had to learn the position for over a year, too. What I and cheese are getting at is it's not easy and there's no guarantees until we see how Feeney goes in the trials. Hopefully he nails the position (we need him to).
