'Ring Gids up and tell him to start searching'

by Stephen Ryan
SMH - November 27, 2010

FORMER Newcastle Knight Chris Houston could have been talking about anything including dietary supplements or prostitutes when he discussed ''lollies'', ''chippies'' and ''supps'' during recorded telephone conversations, his barrister told Newcastle Local Court yesterday.

Defence barrister Simon Harben, SC, cross-examined a detective who made an opinion statement alleging Houston was negotiating drug deals when he was recorded talking to former teammate Danny Wicks and others between August and December last year.

Houston has not entered pleas to four counts of supplying drugs.

Advertisement: Story continues below Harben suggested to the detective that ''chippies'' was an old term for prostitutes and that Houston, in another conversation, could have been trying to source dietary supplements when he was recorded getting a price of ''150 at 14''.

The detective maintained it was his opinion that ''chippies'' meant ecstasy and that ''150 at 14'' meant 150 tablets at $14 each.

Included in the conversations was an exchange between Houston and Wicks via telephone at 3.38am on September 13, 2009, just hours after the Knights were knocked out of the 2009 premiership.

Houston: ''What about something local then. Low key, under you. What about your old roomy. Anything.''

Wicks: ''I don't know. I'll give them a call.''

Houston: ''Let us know. Ring 'em now and let us know.''

Wicks: ''Ring Gids up and tell him to start searching.''

Houston: ''Yeah, well I want them ASAP.''

Wicks: ''Oh well, I'm well aware of that mate. I'm f---ing infuriated.''

Later in the same conversation, Wicks said: ''Well what about that Deano c---.''

Houston: ''I don't know his number.''

Wicks: ''Yeah, that's what I'm saying, ring Gids.''

Houston: ''All right. Speak to you soon.''

Harben suggested to the detective that his interpretation of the conversations was not objective because the detective carried out surveillance and was involved in the arrest of Wicks, who has since pleaded guilty to supplying drugs.

The detective maintained that he was not heavily involved in the investigation and his opinions were based on his many years working undercover and in drug operations.

This could end up bad.

Maybe gidley was only brought up in the conversation. he could have nothing to do with offloading the drugs and was just suggested by wicks. I guess we will find out the full extent of this in the following days.

hopefully they were talking about nutrition supps if it has something to do with gids but i am being very optimistic

This evidence has been available for over a year now. If Gids was in any legal trouble he would have been charged already with Wicks and Housten.

The only thing bad is Gids getting some bad publicity. But there is little the club or NRL can do on this evidence alone. There is nothing saying Gids is involved in dealing or using ecstasy. Just that he could have been sourcing some for mates. Gids could have contacts with dealers, doesnt mean he is using or dealing himself. Like I know mates who'd be able to get me some, but Ive never used in my life, never even come in contact with them, other then seeing mates with them.

Wanting Nutrition supplements hours after the final game of the season..very optimistic  I dont think they'd get that worked up about not having some vitamens at 3am in the morning.

However at the start of the investigation they did allure to the possibility of potentially more charges being laid against other individuals.

Didnt they say something like a very high profile player could be involved? Hopefuly this turns out to be nothing though!!!

The term "Chippies " is NOT a term for ectasy however it is a term for LSD which i dont think any of them were caught with.
I really cant see Gids being into this stuff at all so i really think this is a nothing article on his account but the evidence doesnt look good for Houso.
I havent heard of E refered to as lollies for a long time ive always called them "disco biscuits"!
I really hope this court case is finalised soon for the sake of the club and us the fans

Yeah as i said along time since ive heard them called that usually they're called disco biscuits and Go Go's! They stopped using Lollies ages ago ( well the people i use to buy off did) simply because everyone knew what lollies were.

Anyways time will tell what happens but as someone said above if gids were involved something would have happened to him ages ago

I don't think Gids has anything to worry about, he himself came out in last pre-season saying he had nothing to worry about. Gids doesn't seem like the lying type to me.

I'd lie if i had a lucrative contract at stake. Not many of us would have picked Housten as a guy who'd be involved in drugs, probably Wicks too, or any footballer on good money for that matter.

I'm starting to feel pretty sick. Kid at school has told me that he has been into drugs, friend or something told him he saw gidley bros doing them in the toilets at a friends wedding (obviously I didn't believe him). But yeah not looking good.

Well... this could shape to be a huge dent in our off season, if it hasn't already.

I'm suprised the media haven't picked up on this quicker.

In Gidley's defence... it sounds to me that Wicks & Houston were after drugs quick and local... and were going to ask Gidley if he knew anyone or if he can give them 'Deano's' number.

That's what I've viewed the article as.

Not sure if it's illegal to pass on a number of a drug supplier, but he may certainly be an accessory.
