Recruitment And Retention Discussion

I find it hard to believe teams are willing to offering a million or more for a guy who may miss a month or two with injuries. Just doesn't happen
The talk about it is just media talk, no team is supposed to or allowed to say they'll offer x amount before Nov 1

That said if he continues to kill it going forward, admittedly he will be hard to keep even missing the odd games here and there.
It does happen, Souths pay Latrell Mitchell over a million a season and he missing more games than Best.

In saying that, Souths seem to have realised paying Mitchell over a million as season for a guy who plays around half the season isn’t such a good idea. Will be interesting to see what amount they end up resigning him for

Also desperate clubs do desperate things, like offering players overs to get them

I find it very hard to believe like R_A that people will spend massive on a guy that what, Didn’t string more than 5 games together during the season. Granted this is when the mind numbing horror teams come into play to show everything that there are dumb clubs out there.

That brings the believability back to earth with teams like the Tigers, Titans, Eels, Cowboys etc showing that they do exist and it would be something those clubs do to spend big on a big time centre and not actually target their problem areas.

That way I see is if he stays fit he is worth the money but for a guy that couldn’t string many together I think $700k is extremely generous and if the rumours are true that they’ll put a pay increase clause in his deal for when the cap rises than I’d say the Knights have bent over for him very kindly.

I highly doubt a top club like a Penrith or Roosters will be offering mega money so this is very much a battle with lesser clubs

Who will continue to be lesser clubs if they spend big on a centre...

All of them, we had best for years too and we didn’t click until we fixed what needed to be fixed ie. props, halfback, five-eighth.

A centre will not take you and win a premiership if no one can get him the ball in the spots he likes everyone knows this

How the bulldogs doing once they spent massive on a big time centre? How many rings?

Yeah, after watching us flail around aimlessly for many years, I don’t think you can underestimate how poor some club’s recruitment is. So I’m sure he’s got offers out there that are bigger than ours. I guess the question for Best is, is it worth it going to a club like the Tigers for a bit of extra coin, just as we’ve become a force.

That’s exactly the issue he finds himself in he is literally trying to pick between money or a better chance of success.

Honestly must be very difficult thing to do

Unless he's had a falling out with the team/coach I don't see Latrell leaving the Bunnies. As it was mentioned at the time, Souths' indigenous culture and brotherhood, playing under Bennett etc was a drawcard. Not to mention he also could have fielded better offers at the Tigers and even the Roosters were willing to up their offer. Souths were also willing to let him play fullback (not an issue I guess with Best)

As it was mentioned Bennett coddled Latrell a bit, different needs for different folks, Demetriou couldn't, a lesser team with a coach who probably has a lesser aura probably wouldn't, thats where things fell apart at South Sydney. I think teams will be way of this as well.

I think that'll be a norm for a lot of bigger names, I'm okay with it.

Oh, I wasn’t implying Latrell would ever leave Souths. I was just using him as an example that is similar to our situation with Best

Souths will try signing him to a reduced contract compared to his current contract because of all his injuries and games missed. It’s smart business by Souths.

It’ll just be interesting to see how much less he signs for at Souths

Come November 1, there are going to be dumb clubs that are desperate for a marquee signing that will offer Latrell over a million a year, possibly up to 1.3 million

I agree but I feel Latrell is less likely to leave personally because of the affiliation he has with the team and Bennett. The age old rule that players will take less to play under Bennett. Just a personal hunch.

Plus I don't see him choosing to go to the Tigers or Eels for $1.3m but that's just a personal hunch for mine.

That said the rumours of the Bears are interesting because they would be desperate enough but I think they'd have to offer 1.5-1.6m as rumoured in comparison.

Barry Toohey has changed his tune a bit on Best. he was almost certain he’d sign a week or so ago. Now he sounds like he is more hopeful. The club has good options for left
Centre, with Lucas and Hunt, so I
Do not get the obsession over him staying.
I think you move Phoenix to lock and put Manu and McEwen as edges.

It is this reason why I think the club is serious about signing Grant. I feel his manager has leaked this info to put pressure on the Storm . The fact it has not been denied should tell you
Something. Let’s be real here. Grant makes is a lot stronger side than keeping Best. His dummy half running and distribution is without peer. Easily the best dummy half in the world.

I feel the obsession is very clear

Grant playing style suits our running halves and would be a dream to have but do like our guys we got and I think we've got a good one coming thru in hagan

No chance for Grant. How would you fit another million in the cap without the Roosters Sombrero.

Sharpe a bigger priority especially when we have a gun awaiting a crack in Hagan

And I reckon the reason we’ve heard very little from the club, including no public denial of the Grant rumours, is because we finally have a professional front office that doesn’t feel the need to respond to every bit of speculation.

Which, quite frankly, is a very positive! Not every rumour needs a press conference or a public statement. Just get on with the job.
