Recruitment And Retention Discussion

I watched the Last game of seves at home and ive never seen a trainer ride a player so hard from the sideline, Adam Blair spent the whole half barking at him and only him non stop. disinterested would be a good way to describe his efforts. either not happy in Newcastle or doesnt like people pushing him to reach the elite level.
If Seve had hearing like a bat, he should have been able to hear me yelling for him to get involved from 30 klm away.

He looked a bit better when he played for Qld in the under 19s, but I still think he could have done a lot more. He just seems to wait for the ball to come his way, rather than calling for it.

Article on Seve being released.
It confirms his contract was for top 30 in 2027 and so we have another top 30 spot to fill.
No mention of how much money, but minimum top 30 is 150k - so we now have 300k to spend if you add Seve's money to the 150k mentioned by Toohey last week.

There's a spot for Friz.
If we can't get Friz done for whatever reason, maybe Jones on a minimum deal?

If Seve was only on the minimum or close to it then we're no better off money-wise anyway, that spot will need to be filled by another player on the same amount. Would be helpful if he was on a bit more.

Wouldn't be surprised if he's replaced by Toby Winter in any case. He's on a development deal next year and will be eligible for NRL anyway but could use a promotion + pay increase to get another year or two on the end of his deal.

I thought Winter was already on a dev deal since the knights post said 2026 and 27’

Winter: Dev deal 26/7, already has a top 30 deal for 28/9. Much like how we didn't **** around and got four years of Cody Hopwood secured well before he actually made a first grade debut. This club has been a lot better about going "I know it when I see it" and not ****ing about with these kids.

10 ten players (according to Zero Tackle) who are still off contract for next year. Probably no one here we'd be interested in except maybe Shawn Blore.

According to POS from his interview on that Pod we are locked up for 2027. So no new recruits for next year.

I honestly think we should see if we can keep Brodie Jones, and keep Frizz for one more year.

I'm happy to see it, the club looks very stable at the moment on and off-field, and that should allow us to easily continue to build on what we've done this year.

We don't need more quick fix veteran signings. That's been our biggest issue. Honestly wouldn't even count Niukore as that because his value overwhelmingly comes from being a guy you can plug into any gap in your forward pack rather than him being relied upon as someone to win you games.

On the right track by betting on young talented guys with everything to prove, the forward pack will improve more via Hopwood, Crouch, McEwen, Manulelua etc improving as players than it ever has via us making big splashy signings.

All we need is the motor room to make the space and momentum for the backs and edge forwards. We have very mobile and fast footy side across the park. Our recruitment has been nothing short of perfect IMO, as has been retention. Manu, Hopwood and McEwen are all guns we would have lost in years gone by. Sully will look to 2028 as a massive number of OCs coming up across the code. Sharpe long term deal naturally will be the highest priority.
KP
Dom - close to re-signing I believe.
Hunt
Best
Marz
Sharpe
Brown
Croker
McEwen
Lucas
J Saf
Crossland
Mooney

Smith
Manu
Hopwood
Niokure
Frizz
Crouch

That is a strong football side if all goes well with re-signings.

Mozer and Vaimaga are two I reckon have bright futures. Timoko if he comes cheap. We could use a prop but might be cheaper to develop our own.
