In today’s modern game the difference between 6 and 7 is **** all at most clubs. First receiver? Second receiver? It’s whoever puts their hand up on the 5th and it varies every game club to club. I think teams that play it traditionally are a bit short sighted and one dimensional.

My memory sucks but I recall a time at Newcastle maybe 10 years ago or more that the coach wanted the halves to stick to their sides of the field and play to their sides of the field and we sucked for it. Imagine being told you can only operate on half the pitch? What is that supposed to achieve besides choking, restricted and predictable play?

True but its also the case that most specialists in any position are usually better, even if slightly, on either an edge or in the middle.

Same will likely be true of McEwen and ESL. If were to bet Id say McEwen will perform better on an edge than in the middle. So while its good (and necessary) to have a bunch of guys who can do both, its ideal to have a vast majority of your pack as specialists
 
The basic structure of what the Storm do in attack is that Munster controls the left and Hughes controls the right though. It’s not like they wear shock collars which go off when they cross to the other side of the field but their heat maps would be very left side dominant for one and right side dominant for the other. So it clearly can work.

Meanwhile the Cleary heat map would overwhelmingly have middle third touches. The traditional #7 is alive and well. The misgivings over the Brown signing aren’t that every team needs one no matter what, it’s that it kind of seems like that’s the player you’d want to pair with Sharpe at 6 and it’s the kind of player Ponga has always played best with.

I don’t think the doubts around Brown are that people insist on
 
Trey Mooney would be the obvious player to grab and slot right into starter, hopefully we can use his want for first grade and lack of game time at the raiders as fuel to bring him.

It was reported that he was unhappy with his lack of game time wasn’t it?. If we can play to that and tell him he is basically a starter as long as he can preform I believe it should be enough to grab him.

Even though he is under contract if we can tell him these things he might be tempted to ask out of his deal at the end of the year.

Interesting he was struggling to get a game at the Raiders but as soon as Toohey reported him being unhappy he suddenly got picked. Unfortunately I think the Raiders will start giving him more and more game time so he stays.
 
The Toohey stories were planted to try to get one of Mooney or Saulo to shake loose. Mooney would have been better but Saulo has been one of the best props in NSW Cup too and is a good in for us.
