Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Sounds like POS wants to pay Kalyn a percentage of the cap deal.

Meanwhile Brown’s deal starts as an overpay but barely ratchets. The cap going up magically opens cap space if you are paying static values that don’t have significant ratchet clauses.

Brown’s deal only going up by $100K is likely how we’re going to pay for an upgrade for Fletcher Sharpe & potentially 1-2 other guys too.

A deal for Kalyn which could potentially pay him $2 million by the end of it likely means they expect the cap to go up to over $17 million before that deal ends.

Even though KPP hasn’t set the world on fire, McEwen is still probably a year or 2 away from being a regular in first grade. What would be a fair price to re-sign KPP for?

Yeah we shouldn’t be looking to lock him down with a really long term deal, but we absolutely did miss him. Good news for Kai.

Meanwhile Elliott was one of our worst and Hetho offered nothing.

If we re-sign Kai and let those two go the full strength pack could look something like this:

8. J Saf
9. Crossland
10. Friz
11. Lucas
12. Kai
13. Cant

14. Arthur
15. Jones
and then in spots 16 & 17 we ease in the likes of Hopwood, Sullivan, McEwen, etc.

Should be playing Cant off the bench this year and giving him plenty of burn so as to build him up to be ready for the starting 13 role next year. For me he looks like a better player than Crokes & Hetho already and should be picked ahead of them.

eah to me Can’t needs to be in the 17 each week. Future starting 13 easily, potentially next yr. He’ll only get better the more game time he plays.

Cant was all effort but I’m not convinced yet, maybe next year with more games under his belt, put on a bit of muscle he might change my opinion.
Thought he made a few errors, gave away penalties and didn’t often bust the line but that will come later I hope, he certainly made tackles, he is still young and learning

Cant is more in the mould of a Cam Murry / Ruben Cotter type player. He’s not a player that will bust/bend the line. He’s a hard worker, heaps of energy in attack and defence. With footwork and power find his front for quick play the balls.

I was thinking more Kurtis Morrin. Don’t think Cant is a starter but could be a decent bench player.

The thing about that Murray/Cotter style of middle is that you need to be a bit careful about what you pay them. Both have been a lot less effective as the powerful props they’ve played with in previous years have aged. But both also on very big coin for middles so the cap space to bring in new muscle up front hasn’t quite been there.

The work rate on both sides of the ball is very valuable though and allows others to play more as impact players.

Code sports (buzz) reporting knights aiming to loc KP down for 2mil a yr.

This obsolete is t a surprise, though like to think KP would pull and Cleary and sign a future contract that drop 200k off his salary each year so it helps retain junior prospects.

Great to see our up and comers get a crack at first grade. Can’t can certainly go the distance, but he( and McEwen for that matter) have only just started their NRL journey. Like to get the more games before casting my judgement on them. The NRL is a tough gig.

Wel

Well they need too. With top loading the spine now we need these guys coming through our pathways to step up. But I’m confident enough they will.

So this guy had his first game of Mathews yesterday.
We had a 40 - 10 win - our best of the season - and jumped from 8th to 5th (into the 6 team finals)
Sione Haukinima seems to be a Union convert and is 120kg. He is pretty fit and agile for such a big unit and in a 20 or 30 minute stint was having plenty of runs and bending the line a lot.
I assume he is an SOB signing and is apparently only flying down from Qld for gameday for the rest of the Mathews season - he is the one in the photo blocking out the sun.aaa.jpg
