I believe this is where we need to get to, spending a decent chunk of our cap on the spine, and then have a few key forwards on good coin, and rely on cheapies to fill out the squad that have a simple role they do for us.

Our issue of course has been, and continues to be, that we can't attract quality spine players like Munster, Hughes, Pezet (future quality), Brown.

Sure, we got Pearce, but he was already heading on the decline when we signed him, and Hastings, which whilst he has potential to be quality, has his own baggage.

Which is why I am in support of rolling the dice with Brown. We could wait for Hughes and go in for him, but then we could wait and wait and wait and never land a player.

The only other part I will say is about Sharpe. He is on a good contract for us if he works out at 5/8th, but if he is blitzing it there, club would be under pressure to upgrade him early or lose him.
 
Storm would have to have the highest paid spine wouldn’t they. We got Sharpe cheap now. And also Auther/Crossland. But if those boys come on they will need upgrades. Ponga would be an interesting one on what sort of money it will take to keep him here.

I believe so. No one else has a million dollar+ hooker (and Grant is worth that and more IMO) so it’s hard for other teams to end up with as high a number. Allegedly Pappy is getting extended on a million dollar deal, so if they then also re-sign Hughes, they will have four million dollar+ spine players on the books…

If you include freight paid to players for them to play at other clubs, I think it’d be between Manly, Souths and Wests for second. Then Brisbane & Easts I think?

Brailey is going at the end of this year.

Crossland has already done enough to warrant an upgrade. Arthur we need to take this year and suss him out at NRL level more, see how he is going to shape up for us and he might need an upgrade, but a more modest one as he is starting out.
 
This 10 year deal would have to have all sorts of clauses in it. How old was DCE when he did his 10 year deal? I think this is the last year of that.

Have to say that’s one long term deal that’s worked out well for all parties. So they do go right occasionally! But nobody ever really talks about the DCE one …
 
I actually think the DCE one was horrible when it started out hahaha. It was about 20% of their cap. ****ed their ability to put a good team around him. In relative terms he was basically making twice what KP was making.

It’s market value now of course.
 
Yeah Tino’s contract is the worst in the comp. Not least of all because he’s absolutely not a million dollar middle. I don’t think he’s even a top ten middle in the NRL right now.
 
Online saying another club has come in matching our offer.

What chance this is PNG looking to secure a big name signing? How would that fit in with Browns contract at Eels?

The length worked out fine - since we were talking about long contracts. I really know nothing about Manly's salary cap.
 
Warriors are probably the most likely team looking at Dylan Brown.

I know the Roosters said they're not interested but Uncle Nick seems like the type of guy to say they're not interested but really they are.

Oh yeah I get you. Yeah the length hasn’t been a problem. Locking down a spine player for a long time isn’t an issue like it is with forwards.

In saying that though, Cherry is an outlier still. He’s older than Mitchell Pearce. He’s probably going to end up second for games played behind Smith. Very rare level of longevity.

If it was 8 years for Brown I wouldn’t blink, 33 being his retirement age is pretty much exactly what I’d bet on.
 
Players signed by PNG won't have to pay tax, so their salary cap is also going to be a lot larger than it looks on paper. That's going to add an interesting dynamic to recruitment.

Also, I'd imagine they'll at least look at cap exemptions for the Perth Bears. There's a reason why AFL players based in Perth retire on average a couple of years earlier. Apparently, those constant long flights are brutal.

I guess the length and the amount paid do go hand in hand to an extent, nobody is going to sign 10 years for $250k. A long contract is always going to be costly.

You'd have to assume they will try to line up a Bennett or Bellamy...... Cause remember how much trouble even Bennett had getting players to sign. I can only imagine PNG, Ben Barba and Todd Carney could be their initial signings lol.
