Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Yeah, I was dirty at suggestions that Leo was going to the Dogs for the same or even less money than offered by the Knights. It turns out that's not true. I have no objection to Leo getting paid as long as it goes on the Dogs' cap.

Apparently, it's "Moneyball" to pay overs for a prop. lol
Yeah I read that somewhere recently 🤔

Leo apparently on $825K/year from 2026 according to Zero Tackle website. Yeah, I feel better about things now (assuming it's accurate) 😆
apparently 825k from dogs per season, was about 875k offer per season from raiders so I heard on SEN

So much for the Dogs being better at managing their salary cap!
honestly they've identified an area where they were serious lacking and filled that void, haven't paid overs and that shows by how in demand he was, its an empty market for front rowers. The only players in their roster that would attract big money offers elsewhere would be Mahoney, Critter, Kiks and Thompson. Burton would as well but the dogs locked him down for 700 odd k early. Don't think any of their other signings have broken the bank. Can't say that an unwanted Curran, Tupouniua, Mann or Sexton were breaking the bank by any means, shall I go on with their list of good recruits while not breaking the bank. Gus is a genius

870/900k is what I’m hearing if that’s true that’s serve overpayment unless he was a top 3 prop in the comp and right now he isn’t even top 5 well behind
Haas
JFH
AFB
Tapine
Tino
Leota

I’m super glad we didn’t do something stupid like we did with D-Saf, POS is hard nosed when it comes to contracts he will pay you what he thinks you’re worth to the team not what your manager says.

Gould certainly should have been the first port of call for Wests when they took over the Knights. 10 yrs on we'd be well on the way towards building sustained success by now.

With good cap management comes a degree of leeway in making calculated risk in recruitment strategy. Leo obviously fills their void.

good example of great cap management. The dogs looking towards the future identified a 21 yr old talent from a successful culture to play in their halves ( with a massive boot) to build a team around. Juxtaposed to the Knights looking towards the next season recruited a not particularly outstanding 27 yr old journeyman for the same money.

Meanwhile over at the Raiders looking towards the future they've recruited a 1, 7, and 6 from the under-19's state of origin spine

I recall we recruited a young half from a team with a massive boot to play for us.

Didn't go too well when the Knights tried it.

Always a lottery. We have Wilson De Courcey at the moment who is meant to be the next big thing from Penrith (albeit not a half), we'll see what happens there.

The Bulldogs supporter is talking through his hat as usual.

The Panthers' golden run didn't start until they sacked Gould for interfering in the team. It was Gould who sacked Cleary to hire Hook. lol If the Knights had hired Gould (not that Gould would have left Sydney and his media commitments so this whole fantasy is nonsense) we'd probably have had Hook as coach...genius stuff.

And of course, Leo is on overs. He's getting paid JFH, AFB money and he's nowhere near that level....yet.

Leo's getting paid on potential. He's also signed for 4 years. By the time he hits the last year of his Bulldogs contract, he'll have already played 4 more years in the toughest position in Rugby League. The average Rugby League career is about 45 games.

With the length and size of his contract, the Dogs are taking a big risk that Leo meets his potential and stays healthy over such a long period. Whilst it was a way worse deal ask the Cowboys what they think about the idea of signing props to huge contracts for extended periods.

BTW the Dogs are still not sure who their halfback is, they were gungho on Sexton but by the back end of the season they seemed to have cooled on him, they still haven't locked him down (which according to the Bulldogs supporter is a sign a player is either bad or unwanted which is of course nonsense).

Anyway good luck working for Gus, Leo the bloke is not just a plonker he's a fickle plonker.

PS. It doesn't seem the average NRL career is that short because we focus largely on the exceptions but watch any game from a couple of years ago and count the players you recognise who are now out of the league and didn't hit 45 games.

This is how it is now with more and more teams added.

Not enough talent to go around, so promising players attract ridiculous sums now as the lucky few clubs horde the established stars.

Clubs are left overpaying for what they can get.
Is lack of talent really a thing when the NRL constantly loses superstar players to union only to replace them with as good or better players and when the Dolphins enter the comp, unearth a stack of talent and are unlucky not to have played finals in the first two seasons (with Bennett dropping Katoa for the last few games a gift for the Knights).

Geez I'd love to pinch Katoa and Plath for the Knights *

* Yeah I know not going to happen.

Another backhander at the Knights.
"Meanwhile over at the Raiders looking towards the future they've recruited a 1, 7, and 6 from the under-19's state of origin spine"

These are all good kids but doesn't necessarily translate to the NRL. Knights supporters I'm sure remember how excited we were to sign Toyota Cup player of the Year Beau Henry (and centre of the year...I think...Likiliki) neither played much NRL.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of equally exciting prospects at the Knights. Both locally developed and signed from elsewhere.

The Knights aren't sitting on their hands, they're trying to identify, develop and recruit the best talent the same as every other club.

bit of a false equivalency ,

25 yr old Clifford was in and out of first grade for a mid table team, and had played only 40 odd games over 4 yrs at the Cowboys and languishing in reserve grade when the Knights signed him up.

21 yr old Burton eased into the Premiers and was a fringe SOO player in his last year there, chosen for NSW in his first year at the dogs.

With more teams entering the comp the asking price for players are going to go through the roof. Development the only way forward. Clubs should be compensated under the cap for developing players. It would totally change the game.
