Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Hastings did his injury, then Clune came in at the back end of the run. He played the Canberra game then got injured again.

His injures culminated towards his mental attitude for 24. Maybe the coaching staff should have seen this and gone with Cogger straight up to start the season.

Of the 6 wins we had before the bye in R12, Jackson played in 5 of them. A number of those wins were without Ponga.

Jackson is also probably the slowest half in the comp
Agreed. I’ve said previously that if his fitness allows him to then he should look to drop some timber and bring some zip back into his game. I do think though that he’s got more game intelligence than most halves in the comp and as we all know the first few yards are played in the head. If his body can catch back up to his mind (and not contribute to his temper tantrums) then he could be a real force for us again. Here’s hoping…..! 🤞

There is no way he stays beyond his current deal

I'm not saying it's easy to find a good 7. It's near impossible, I'm cognizant of that. I'm just steadfast about how we as fans respond to that challenge. I'm intolerant to spending 4 seasons failing to find a workable option at halfback. They don't even need to be a star, I was stoked with 23' Hastings. Stoked.
So if he sorts his **** out, becomes our 7 again and gets a contract extension, and Will Pryce grabs the #6 jersey and let’s say he’s at least a good first grade five-eighth who comes up with about 1 key try involvement per game, does that retroactively mean the club did a good job of sorting out the halves situation?

Does anyone know what’s going on with Riley Jones? He is a speed demon and with us having Crossland, Brailey, Arthur and Davis he obviously won’t get a look in at 9, he can play 6 and played a few games last season there and I’m pretty sure he can play wing.

But he is what 22 now and there was someone i forget that said AOB didn’t like him or something.

I quite liked his debut against the Dragons and thought he played very well and was hoping to see him a little more in 2024, his contract also runs out at the end of this year I think, has he been thrown on the discard pile?

It will be a pass I say. On extensions all pans out to how well we go this season, and how well those two play. 1 - 2 year until hopefully a junior comes through or quality halve becomes available.

It was posted on here that, because we have so many options at hooker now, he was told to find a new position for himself.

Not that we need many more of them, but he could be a decent ball-playing lock. He's tall and just needs a bit more weight perhaps.

If there was such a thing as a specialist number 18 Riley would be perfect. He could fill in nearly anywhere.
He has been tried everywhere and looks good, but just not good enough to be starting first choice anywhere.
He is a bigger, better Kurt Mann.

Hazelton is a very good player, I enjoy watching him play.
I believe he is a specialist bench prop.
I don't think we should buy him as a starter.
We could really do with him off the bench.
$400k would be good value imo.

Damn because with his size, gas tank and speed if he could develop into a 6 that would be really good or even a winger.

The club signed Hastings, a player with a history of drama and hoped that it'd be different for us. The club signed Pryce, a raw fullback teenage talent and hoped to transition him to 5/8th in the NRL. Both signings were risky with high potential return.

Given how relatively unlikely your hypothetical situation is, I'd consider the club lucky to have that materialise. But if it did materialise, you gotta pay that because the club deliberately aimed for that target and hit it. Should be said, I've been a proponent of this strategy, I think some risk is healthy for a club in our position and I back both of those players. Still do.

That said, my concern is with the here-and-now not hypotheticals. We've known since early-mid last season that Pryce wasn't a gimmie to transition successfully and that Hastings form and viability at 7 was apparently subject to what may be insurmountable psychological issues, notwithstanding his physical fitness affecting things like kicking and running. We've known these things for like 8 months or so and in that time our only solution was to put all our eggs into the basket of an unproven 4th string halfback from a rival club, which as it happened, failed to come off.

You can call us unlucky or you can call us incompetent. Given how every single other club in the NRL manages to avoid the situation we find ourselves in, I'm inclined to lean towards incompetence over misfortune when forming a view on why.

I agree strongly that risks need to be taken when signing unproven players. That comes back to the Scouts of the club. I’m sure all club Scouts would like to have a Crystal Ball, as we or anyone else, doesn’t have this, it comes back to the Scouts ability to spot potential, but let’s face it, some risk is essential. If we wait too long for a player to show their potential, one of the richer clubs will swoop, especially those clubs that don’t seem to have a Salary Cap! The other problem is that some players may choose to go to a club that has better potential to win a Competition, so it’s important as a club to not over pay for such potential. The only way we can lure players to the club, other than throwing the cheque book at them, is to improve our standing on the ladder, which means taking a punt on potential. Unfortunately I don’t think our present coach has the ability to bring the best out of our current players & as far as the coaching ranks go at the moment, I don’t think there is a better option coming through. So I think we are stuck between a rock & a hard place at the moment unless some real risks are taken, which includes blooding some potential we already have. As the saying goes, the definition of madness is using the same unsuccessful methods & expecting a different result.

And strongly agree with most of this offering.

I think this is all already happening? We’ve blooded plenty of young talent since AOB has been at the club, and most of it has gone pretty well.
