Recruitment And Retention Discussion

Yeah look. If the reported numbers are true, I think we’re at the point where I can live with either outcome.

If Brown stays at Parra I’d be cool to just chuck $500K a season for 3 years at Toby Sexton and be done with it. Hold him until some kid comes through the system who demands to take the jersey off him. But POS seems committed to the big swing.
(Or we could just back Cogger in, back Ponga/Sharpe/Arthur to win us games while Cogs just steers us around and kicks to the corners, and spend the difference on the best prop/lock forward we can find… I know this is not a popular take though 😆)

We stick with Cogger and Gamble. Next year a 7 will come on the market to upgrade, or we stick with what we have and wait for a Junior. Your right we can still be a good side with the spine we have.

Brown, I will say, I’m fine with a 5 year deal. But I don’t see where people think he is worth 1.3mil. I just don’t see it. He’s not a 7 IMO. As a six he does not demand that money. What Parra are paying him 800 - 900k is what he is worth. Yes offer him a bit more to get him here otherwise he can stay at Parramatta.

And this argument that Ponga will go if we don’t get DL I don’t agree with either.

Why would he come here for slightly more money?

Who exactly? There’s literally nobody. We haven’t had a suitable junior come through in like 20 years.

Ftr I’m not comfortable with the brown contract amount either, but the 2 options are either take a punt and hope he improves out of the Eels (very possible, they’re a **** show) or settle with what we have and never be in a premiership window. There’s no additional 3rd option where we pick up another half that will be the answer, at least not realistically.

Which prop or lock are we going to sign though realistically?

Also, do you really see KP staying if the halfback we end up signing is Sexton or similar?

Our Lord Saviour and Storm reserve grader Jonah says 👋. Let’s not forget getting him home was #1 choice.Shame that never worked out.

Ponga's next contract is his last big one. If we are still fluffing around with Cogger and Gamble, why wouldn't he chase a premiership? The money on offer would be similar.
Serious question, where’s Ponga going to get the Premiership? All the short to medium term teams have quality FB’s. Would have to be Chickens who may be decent again in 3-years. I like Brown. I dislike $1.3m over 10 years. Mental and risky.

So if Brown signs with us is it possible he won’t want to play 7, would be happy for him to play 6, still an upgrade until Sharpe blossoms.
But, what if Brown plays 6 and we play Cogger or Gamble as 7 until we develop Sharpe at 7 or find another suitable 7 because they want to play alongside a top class 6.
Not getting rid of Sharpe, he will find his best position and make others play better to keep him at bay, Gagai retires, Schiller to centre, Sharpe to wing if 7 doesn’t work out. Endless possibilities, more thinking more possibilities.
Bottom line Brown signing at 6 or 7 makes us a better side. Sharpes development makes us a better side.
As back up, while development continues we have Cogger and Gamble
