It's just wasted salary cap that could be used to attract a quality player in the future but Brown knows he needs to show improvement in 2017 to a) make the club more attractive to potential recruits and b) try not to get run out of town.
True, but whats' the point of having money there and not using if if no one half decent is available. They've said, the money is there for a couple of average (cheap signings) and one quality player. We still have money in our cap if someone decent ; (a) becomes available, and (b) wants to come to Newcastle.

The point is it's going to take a huge $$$ offer to tempt someone decent to the knights dumpster fire and wasting $150k for a year of Heighington means $150k less for actual quality. We have more than enough average players, a few more isn't changing anything. Brown is getting another spoon Heighington or not.

I'd be saving the cash for Lolohea or Matulino because it's going to take most of that $1 million of cap space to get them interested.

If it took $650k a year to get Vaughn to the Dragons Matulino is asking for $750k plus.

We can say we should be saving money for a quality player all we want facts are no quality player wants to come here in our situation so it's irrelevant. We Need to show improvement this year than improve off that again with hopefully bigger signing next off season. There are no quality players available and if there was we sure as hell wouldn't get them. Heighington brings a lot of experience and is a old head which we need and Starling is a proven NRL player that adds to the depth of our pack. Don't see why people are whinging for. It's either sign players like this or no1.

In all seriousness I think Matulino has been **** last 3-4 years.

He wasn't great this year, but 2015 averaged 160m a game and was in conversation for best prop in the comp. He also has a great offload which is something our squad desperately lacks.

Wasted how? If it's a year deal then we still get that money for next year. Heino will improve middle d. Nobody decent if is a contract so I don't see why not.

Heighington just played in a grandfinal and we got 2 spoons how could he not make us better ...

Because he's not a good player anymore? By your logic we should sign Shane Perry to play halfback and get Hagan back as head coach.

Disappointing to read comments from Lolohea and his manager that he will leave warriors if Foran approved but wants to play 5/8. Dragons in box seat.

From the Mole
The Knights are resigned to losing talented utility back Jake Mamo, leaving them relatively short of experience out wide.
Mamo is on contract for 2017 but has received a lucrative offer from former Knights coach Rick Stone at English club Huddersfield.
As a result, the Knights are looking for outside backs and are considering Penrith utility Will Smith.
Smith is off contract at the Panthers and has been told by the club he is free to leave.
Smith played just four games in the top grade last year but is a talent who could become a regular top liner with the struggling Knights.
Smith was born and raised in Newcastle so the switch is likely to suit him.....Dean Whare is looking for a new home I read ...

We had our chance to sign Will whilst Benny was here, but declined. Hence I would just love to see him come back and make it.

Have I entered bizaro world and missed the sign? Jake Mamo leaving is going to leave a gap in experience out wide? He played fullback consistently.

Anyway, RE: Lolohea, why not play Mullen at hooker interchanging with Rory, and put Lolohea in the 5/8 role.

Pass on Smith he's not First Grade standard. The only decent game I can recall him having was against us last year. Massive yes to Whare though. He's extremely under rated and one of the better centres in the comp when fit.

Wonder if Stocky has a dig in the preseason if he may get another chance? Big enough for prop if he added 5-10kgs.

Would be quite funny, the second coming of Stockwell. He has been as good as gone for about 6 months. He's good enough to get a spot in our 17, hopefully he wants to rip in this pre-season & prove Browny wrong.

I will back anybody Browny and Mooney sign up as unlike most of the complaining on here both these guys have re built clubs to grand final winners so if heighno & starling are in there minds then they must know a thing or two more than me
