The thing about the "vibes" head coach + "assistant who's actually doing the coaching" dynamic is that if it doesn't work great, instantly, it's just an easy avenue for media scrutiny. "Well of course they're struggling, no one knows who's really in charge." We literally just saw this with the Tigers, they basically admitted that Benji was coaching from the jump and Sheens was just there to talk to the media, do some man motivating, be a sounding board, etc etc etc. All it did was turn the temperature up, instantly, when there wasn't massive improvement straight away. And within a year Benji is the head coach anyway.
And it is a massive, massive, MASSIVE call to bring a head coach from a different - let's be frank, less professional, lower standard - environment, into the cauldron of the NRL. I don't care what anyone says. The man clearly has a massive ego and is not going to be content to sit there and say "rah rah, do your best boys" while Blake Green does all the real work. The guy will bring ideas of his own.
The same media pushing this now - to be clear, doing so with Isaac Moses, a close personal friend of Michael Cheika, sticking his hand up their arse and puppeteering them - will be ready to turn on us the moment the milk turns sour.
I will be devastated if we let this absolute confidence man within 50 metres of our club. It would be the most unserious thing our club has done in a long time. And that's a crowded field.

Matty Johns actually nailed it on SEN the other day:
“What’s really important on a selection committee?” Johns said on SEN’s Morning Glory with Matty Johns.
“You can look at resumes, you can do all this stuff. But you have to ask the right questions.
“If I was in the interview process, I would do the interview, conduct it, talk resumes, talk all this sort of stuff.
“And as they are about to get up to go away when they are nice and relaxed, you say, ‘Listen, before you go. Fletcher Sharpe, Dylan Brown, Kalyn Ponga. What are you going to do (to solve it)?
“Or we’re short on middles, really, really short on middles. When we come up against a great pack of forwards and we’re going to have a pack full of young blokes, how are we going to beat them?
“You have to see the problems that you are going to have in the next 12 months to two years and say, 'right oh, you solve them for me.'”
This was somewhat inspired by the approach the Knights took when they hired their inaugural coach, Allan McMahon, over Ron Willey back in 1988, with Johns telling the story.
“Ron had all the runs on the board,” Johns explained.
“He’d been a great coach for a long time, and Macca (McMahon) was just emerging.
“Ron Willey was probably the favourite, and old Allan Bell and a couple of people, smart old football guys on the panel.
“And the last question both men were asked separately. As they were ready to walk out, ‘Okay, question for you. Tomorrow we are going to play the best pack in the competition; we are going to play the Canterbury Bulldogs. They have got an international pack; we’ve got an understrength pack full of just young blokes, how are we going to beat them?’
“Ron Willey’s response was, ‘I’m going to get up on Sunday morning, I’m going to hop in my car and drive to church and say a prayer’.
“Allan McMahon’s response was,
"We’re not going to try to beat them with muscle.
"What we are going to do is bring our outside backs, all of those young fast blokes through the middle, run from dummy-half, no errors.
"We’re going to kick long, chase hard, defend our hearts outs, and we’ll see how far that takes us.
“And Macca got the job.”
^^^ This is 100% it for me. Watching the team this year, aside from the last six weeks where the arse fell out of the joint and everyone gave up, I really do not think the issue has been "culture" or "effort" or all that fluffy stuff Cheika would apparently solve with the platitudes he's been serving up in the media. I'm of the view that people default to the metaphysical "club has lost its soul/identity" stuff because it's an easy thing to reach for. But I don't think it's why we got handily outscored by a team that usually fielded Lachlan Ilias, Kyle Flanagan and/or a literal child in the halves.
We play a bloody rancid brand of football that sends the players out there in handcuffs and shackles. The lack of confidence has come from ineffective coaching, not from a lack of wanting to win. I really do not believe you can accuse our playing group of not caring and not wanting to win. Maybe this sounds like another easy, glib answer, but when the footy has been as bad as it has, IMO it means there are myriad issues in how the team trains, prepares and at the selection table. It's not just one thing.
It's a footy problem and we need to pick the coach with the best footy answers. Not the one who'll answer questions by telling you what a great businessman he is.

The funny thing about Matty is he is right, we’ve been out coached. He’ll then endorse Michael Cheika for the Knights job tonight on TV and tomorrow on the radio.
Sums up Matty Johns, he’s 50% making solid points, 50% weird left field takes.

Yeah I really enjoy him & Cronk on their show together but you can absolutely tell he's: A) A guy where a lot of his success as a player came from intelligence and a genuinely really deep understanding of the game and B) A guy who's had a lot of concussions.

Toohey slipped the name John Morris into the the people "tipped" to get an interview for the job.
He also quoted Parr as saying the Knights haven't approached anyone and all those to be interviewed approached them - which I take to mean the article saying we have approached Cheika is wrong.
John Morris has more university qualifications than all our current coaches combined - he has basically been studying sports related subjects since he was a teenager in our junior system.

I agree, honestly I'd be having both on coaching staff, one as head coach and the other as our main assistant. Both being ex players also helps their case for sure!

Would honestly love roles/jobs given to more ex Newcastle players/juniors/locals... I think that is what our club is missing a bit of the identity of what Newcastle has been about, some of these current ex players trying their hands at coaching; Holbrook, Morris, Kimmorley, Green just to name a few
