NRL Round 21 - Raiders Vs Knights - 2:00pm Sunday 27th July - GIO Stadium, Canberra

I just don't get it with this team, we either have our defence humming to start the year but no attack or we attack well but can't defend. Is this team not capable of doing both things well for an extended period of time or it's only possible when the season is done.

I do take heart from the fact that our defence has held up throughout this year, no matter who has been injured or who has debuted. I hope that is rusted on fir next year.

Mitchell Pearce talked about this on his podcast recently. He was saying how you have to be careful not to get too excited and play too “loose” in attack or you can’t transition to defence without losing attention to detail and missing your assignment.

Most people who haven’t played league at a high level would be like “well why can’t we just keep our current defence but attack well” but it’s actually really hard to get a good balance which is why you don’t see many teams who are great at both. Even Penrith at their best, you’d never look at their attack and go “wow”. It’s not they didn’t have the players that could be creative, but it served them better in terms of maintaining their same intensity and discipline to be more conservative.

We definitely need to focus more on our attack, but people are going to have to expect that our defence might drop a bit. Likewise if we’re too defensively focussed like we are now, the attack will suffer.

The only change to the 17 to play the Raiders is Hetho has been named on the bench and Cant moves on to the extended bench.

I just hope for a good showing, and no injuries.

Get this one behind us and get a rest over the bye period to recover.
