NRL Round 13 - Knights Vs Eels - 3:00pm Saturday, 30th of May - McDonald Jones Stadium

Just sit Ponga out for Saturday anyway, I mean seriously if we are an actual serious side we shouldn’t need him to beat the Eels, if we do need him it says a lot about where we are at as a team.
1000 percent agree! We should be good!!

I also disagree with just a fine for the incident - I actually think that it should be assessed the same way in club football. If it was a send off or not, it was dangerous play and therefore you pay the consequences. This new rule of just a fine so it doesn’t impact club games? The player who was then taken off the field with the HIA has his club games impacted from an action in a rep game! He’s missing 2 club games due to the 11 day rule!

And if it’s just a fine? Pfft Ponga can afford it! Like he said so blaze in his interview “**** happens”

You obviously don’t risk him if there is deemed to be an extra risk but if the medical staff say he’s all clear there’s not much point in resting him for the sake of resting him. After last night he’ll have a chip on his shoulder and a point to prove, as well as it being his new mate Dylan’s milestone game coming up against his old team for the first time. Reckon he’ll be plenty motivated to be out there.

Wouldn’t be surprised at all if he plays, and wouldn’t be surprised at all if they blow the Eels off the park and he gets an early mark anyway.

Aftermath.

“I didn’t realise it was a send off when I left (the field). I had no idea what was going on to be honest. I thought it was 10 minutes, and to be honest, I thought they might have assessed me for a head knock.

“At the end of the day, it is what it is. The ref made the call.”
So they didn’t even assess him after that? My god you’d think after the Eli Katoa incident they’d now be extra cautious with players.

They clashed heads badly and he was bleeding. Sure, it doesn’t necessarily mean he was concussed but with his history, I think that’s pretty bad. You’d think they at least want to be sure to cover their own asses if nothing else

No reason for him to play this weekend after that and his recent hamstring injury, just not worth the risk for a game they should be winning easily regardless

Ponga agreed to Holbrook to contribute more to the team during his last contract negotiations. I think Ponga will play based on that reason.
If we are slapping the Eels he probably gets an early rest and Hunt comes on imo.

I wish and hope that Ponga was checked for HIA to ensure his future.
Actually starting to think that all players that played in NRL games should be assessed after full time to ensure their well being, no test then they should be assessed as failing HIA test.
Note:- I have no idea how long that tests take and if physically it could be accomplished but player welfare should be front and centre. I’m sure that some players are slipping under the radar.

Full page article in the Herald today - Headline "Will Ponga play against Parra".
The first sentence says he will be assessed today, but doesn't say what he'll be assessed for.
That is literally the only news in the article.
The rest of the page tells the whole story of the send off and what everyone on earth thought about it.

Seems split from what I’ve seen in the media. I’m on the side of it was a sin-bin. But also Ponga didn’t help himself.

Matty Jones, couple of other people brought up his tacking technique. Not sure how he has not at least improved somewhat in this area. Why you could never consider him playing in the halves.

Should.
But, it requires players to take some responsibility for their wellbeing too. 167 podcast, Papenhauzen made a comment once that he got a headache after a head knock that wasn’t caught on camera/no HIA. He went to the medical team and told them and they sat him out. He took some responsibility.

We know the Eli Katoa incident. Blind Freddy sees him knocked out. I think this incident highlights there’s still a lot we need to do to empower players to own up to head knocks. But, it’s part of the ingrained “toughness” of players to push through and not let their teammates down, I get that. I was hopeful that this would serve as a catalyst for change in that regard - your team will be fine, but will your family be okay if something happens?

In this instance it requires Ponga to say, yeh, I feel a bit off after the contact. I think the footage lends itself to a cat 2 - he looks a little stunned.

I don’t think his quotes specifically relate to concussion, eg. I thought it was 10 in the bin. I think he’s more painting a picture of the chaos and extenuating circumstances and his thoughts that it was a head clash and accidental and was therefore confused that he’d been sent.

Even Koula. Deemed a category 2. He gets assessed by the trainer at the time for a while. Category 2 - goes off for assessment. Post match Koula comes out and says he was knocked out. I’m no expert on the immediate aftermath if there’s an element of confusion. Like when my wife wakes me up because I’m snoring, and I refuse the allegations
“No way!”. And maybe there was a delay in having the information passed through to commentary.

In terms of NSW gamesmanship, it makes a lot of sense, IF he was indeed knocked out, for the trainer/medical to call it that at the time - help ensure it’s a send off. But for them to do the assessments with him lying on the ground for so long - category 2, we are gonna assess him. Something doesn’t add up for me.

Holbrook announces Ponga feels good and will play.
Team will line up as named.

Jersey Flegg game has been moved to the C of E because of the rain - so gates now open at 12.30 for the reserve grade game.
Now I am super confident of us winning 20+ even with a rain affected field, we should be way to strong for them. Only probs is I will miss the game live 😭 cause I will be on a plane to Bali but think I will get over missing it live pretty quick as I have a bintang or 3 watching the replay 😁

As someone who works with neurological patients, I completely agree.

Just saw a clip with Ponga saying he didn't realise he was sent off and thought he was going for a HIA - which seems to say he was in Disneyland at the time.
I’d say it is more that every time Ponga would readjust his headgear he would get sent for a HIA.
