NRL Round 1 - Knights Vs Cowboys - 1:15pm Sunday 1st March (AEDT) - Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas

The odds of a Sharpe / Brown halves partnership panning out the way an optimist would hope is so remote imo that if Holbrook tries it and persists with it, we're a certainty to miss the 8.

Brown is an out and out 6 and Sharpe is literally a fullback. Sliding both players up the spine in the hope that they miraculously fulfill the profile of the player they've literally yet to become is the definition of a long shot.

Not even one player, but two. Holbrook would be pushing for a Hail Mary transition on two halves simultaneously. I get that the upside is high, but what are the odds that it works?

Cant see him doing it. Never could see it.

If the case, I also don’t get why we signed Sandon for 500k a year to play backup hooker. In Holbrook we trust….

I mean we’ve only had 2 trials and don’t really know what Holbrook’s actual preferences are. We should probably wait for a few actual games before passing judgment. That being said:

We'll struggle to make the 8 this year unless Ponga plays out of his skin and 2 or 3 of our young forwards put their hand up.

Surely it’s a good idea to give an inexperienced spine, with new players playing in new positions, some sort of indication of where they’ll play and some trial game time together, though?

Article in the Herald this morning about Smith and Sharpe being friends and room mates when on tour.
They apparently share a love of golf and a comedy golf related show called "Bob does Sport".
Anyway - lots of quotes from Sharpe, but gives nothing away about where they will be playing. He does say they should know where they will be playing by the time they get to Vegas.

You guys are being so silly. Think about recent teams to win the comp. Do you ever know what position Nathan Cleary will play in? Reece Walsh? Where are they going to put Dylan Edwards, Ezra Mam? It's a mystery every time. Flip a coin. All those tries Reece Walsh scored and set up in the grand final, you know how that happened? Speed? Skill? No. No, you naive fool. It was because the whole time the Storm were like, "whaaaaaa? I THOUGHT HE WAS A HOOKER!?"

Maybe even use the several months before the season starts to build their confidence by practising in the positions they are going to be playing?
Yep no matter how much you like Fletch in the halves, how do you defend having him train at fullback most of the pre-season? The move should be a non-starter on that basis alone. It's ludicrous. Three months of him not getting the stuff out of his system he needs to to actually make a fist of it in the halves.

Ideally yes, but it’s the Knights. An entity where common sense doesn’t exist and hasn’t the past 20 years.

I’m assuming Brown/Smith was the plan and now he’s second guessing after Smith’s horrible performance. If so it’s disgraceful. The 2 had never played together before and pretty much everyone was terrible against the Dogs so it’s hard to draw any conclusions from that one game.

Who knows maybe all of this deception and musical chairs **** will pay dividends and we’ll come out on fire in Vegas. To be fair I’m keener than I’ve been in a long time to watch us go in Round 1.

Can I ask how much pre season training we all saw? I saw none, so have no idea how/where smith/Sharpe trained.
I saw one session with Sharpe at fullback. Smith 1st receiver and Brown 2nd receiver (they played both sides of the field shock horror) Ponga was training away from the group.

Surely no one thinks the side of the field a half plays on means that they’re permanently fixed on that side, right? Got a lot more to do with where they line up in defence and what the sort of “base” actions are in attack. Like the Plan A for teams that have a 6 like Cody Walker or Luke Keary has been about getting them the ball in their preferred spots on the left, but there are all sorts of variation with them swinging around to the other side.

Not universal obviously but yes some do stay to one side, it depends on the tactics at play.

Brown obviously wasn’t told to just stay on the right but I’ll put money on him being told to do a vast majority on the right, because I went back to watch that game and he did a lot on the right and rarely made the switch when he did he was great, shocking I know put a player in his preferred position that he has played for over 100+ games and he plays good, what a world.

If we want success and Brown to even play good he needs to be on the side he has played on since he came into the comp, the same side he dominated in the pacific championships, park his arse on that left and tell him he can go to the right but a majority on the left with our strongest side by a mile.

Smith can control the right where he played really well against the Dragons and obviously if they see it they can swing around because you have to give them some freedom.

Hope this is all sorted & we come out of the blocks firing . But gotta say the optimism levels have started to waiver . Please let's us look like a footy team . Its been a while 🙁
