BULLDOGS 38 KNIGHTS 22

SONNY-BILL Williams was unbelievable. SBW: Something Bloody Wonderful. Hazem El Masri scored a hat-trick to pass Bulldogs legend Terry Lamb's club record of 123 tries. He even landed a goal while parked on his backside. When you're hot, you're hot. But while El Masri was being feted for making history, the over-riding feeling after full-time was: how good is Sonny-Bill?

He was playing against the Knights for the first time. He wasted no time introducing himself. He stumbled with his first hit-up and fell into a two-man tackle - but still had the balance to give a dream one-handed off-load - and kept sniffing around for possession.

Is he getting paid per touches of the ball? He'll break the Bulldogs' bank. He was heavily involved from the outset and a handful throughout. He is an extraordinary player.

El Masri snuck over in the corner in the 14th minute - his 122nd try - to give the hosts a 4-2 lead.

Williams had played his part twice, making a crunching tackle on Knights prop Craig Smith which jarred the ball loose and gave the Bulldogs possession 30 metres from the Knights line, then giving the final pass, another one-handed flick, to El Masri. The Bulldogs winger was just one try behind Lamb's record - and knew all about it.

The Knights struck back immediately when winger Brian Carney intercepted a pass from Daniel Holdsworth. Then proceedings got tough. Williams drilled Johns. Then came a procession of players losing the ball in one-on-one tackles. There are fewer strippers at Kings Cross. From what we've heard. It happened on four occasions in the first half - and twice in the lead-up to one try.

Williams wrestled the ball from big Knights second-rower Kirk Reynoldson. It was 6-4 to the Knights at this stage. Corey Hughes also stripped the ball off Reynoldson - but then almost immediately, Danny Buderus stripped it back off Tony Grimaldi. Reynoldson gave a superb pass to Clint Newton to score and the Knights, for the time being, had a comfortable buffer.

Another strip: this time, Holdsworth pinching possession from Reynoldson, running five metres to put the ball down under the posts. No try, though. The Knights had gained no advantage from a knock-on by Willie Mason. Hughes dived over from dummy half in the 31st minute and a helter-skelter contest was back to 12-10 to the Knights. By half-time, it was 16-all.

Williams is not your average centre. Standing out wide, he beat the rampaging Knights backs to a bomb from Johns. He executed a textbook tackle on Gidley. Then a couple of occurrences to tell the grandchildren about - you saw Johns knock-on. And then you saw him kick a grubber that went dead. Carrying the ball in his big right paw as he stormed down the right flank, Williams nearly sent El Masri over and into the history books.

El Masri got there soon enough, matching Lamb's benchmark. The Bulldogs army among the 12,658 chanted "Hazem, Hazem" while they awaited video confirmation of the try. When it was awarded, El Masri joined the applause, booted the goal, put one finger in the air and ran back into position. Lamb was at the ground.

Momentum was all with the Dogs. The ball was spun to Williams. It took three desperate Knights to stop him. Holdsworth scooted over and the Dogs were kicking. Johns had his hands on his hips as he trudged back under the posts. The points were coming thick and fast. El Masri slipped and fell as he attempted a conversion - but the ball still went over the black dot. The Dogs would not be denied. El Masri completed his hat-trick, his 124th career try, in the 67th minute and Lamb's days as the top try-scoring dog were over.

Hazem breaks Lamb's mark
By David Riccio

POINTSCORING wizard Hazem El Masri claimed another record last night, surpassing Terry Lamb as the Bulldogs' greatest try scorer.

On a night when El Masri brought up 124 first-grade tries for the club with a hat-trick, the Bulldogs sent out a warning with their second-half performance against Newcastle.

The Knights were "extremely disappointing", according to their coach Michael Hagan, after they were in the match with the scores locked 16-all at halftime.

"We spoke about our performance last week and tonight was as equally poor," Hagan said. "It's not an ideal way to go to the bye, but I don't think it was an (excuse)."

Halfback Andrew Johns was well down on his usual high standards, and the bye can't come quickly enough for the Knights skipper.

Johns looked to have sustained an elbow injury late in the match, while centre Matt Gidley damaged an eye socket in the second half.

But the night belonged to El Masri. Needing three tries to overtake Lamb's record of 123 tries, El Masri scored in the 13th, 51st and 68th minutes. He also landed four goals for a personal haul of 20 points.

His fourth and final goal took him to 600 career goals and 12th on the all-time list.

"I'm very proud and glad it's over and done with," El Masri said of breaking Lamb's mark. "A few of the guys have been mentioning it, so I'm glad to get it out of the way in one night.

"A few things went my way, so I was just happy to grab them."

El Masri's feats were complemented by a stunning return to form from Sonny Bill Williams, who gained 219 metres in his most brutal display of the season.

"That was his best game of the year by far," Folkes said. "It was evident right through the week that he was more switched on and more focused and he played that way.

"He's had a couple of niggling injuries which he is just about over and you could tell he was on from the start."

We were ordinary, Sonny-Bill deadset carved us. Joey wasn't his best, so the bye will do us good.
It's just time to make some changes, a side who has been playing ordinary for 4 or 5 rounds needs to change a bit.
Milton comes back, K.Gids back to 5/8, Lowrie to the backrow.
Drop Brown, Carmount and Tanner and bring up Abraham as lock, Tighe in the centres and move Reynoldson to the bench.
I hope it happens.

Those are nice changes! Good call!

I have been Carmont's biggest fan this year, but he was pretty awful last night. Tighe was our most dynamic outside back in the 2 games he played, dunno why he gets rewarded by being dropped.

Yeah we have Tighe and Abes who are wastes in premier league.
Watching Abes in premier league last night, he was great and he is fit enough to play first grade now.
So if it doesn't happen, i will probably go on a 'I hate Hagan' rampage lol.

That's great news about Abraham. He didn't really get much gametime in the firstgrade game last week, so it was hard to tell how he's going.

Worst moment ever:

Apparently when that happened you could hear the snap...that would be horrible, I wasnt watching the game but I listened to it on the radio and was in tears by the end of it...it was the most heartbreaking game.

It was in the top 5 worst losses for sure. I was in such a bad mood after it!

You could just hear the snap on tv, but a guy on another mailing list I'm on said you could hear it from the grandstand!

Just on Abes, there is nufin wrong with his fitness, I was there last night and there was a run away wih there back, Abes give him bout 10 metres and run him down, although they lost....again Abes was Superb!!!
