Nathan Ross

According to Toohey we are looking to upgrade his contract and possibly offer him another year (2018).

That would be a good outcome for everyone I think.

ROSS STAYING PUT … FOR NOW

Newcastle fans, Nathan Ross will be at the club next season but his future can’t guaranteed beyond that.

While the Knights have an option in their favour on Ross for 2017, they had hoped they’d be able to negotiate a new two-year deal.

But Ross’ management rejected the club’s offer on Tuesday.

However the fan favourite will still be at the club next season with the Knights informing the centre/winger they plan on activating their option which they have until August 31 to exercise.

The exciting back is on a modest deal and while he’s certain to be at the Knights next season, they haven’t given up hope on broking an extension.

Not short of interest, Ross recently met with Penrith supremo Phil Gould about joining the Panthers, while Super League clubs are lining up for his signature.

Predicted this earlier. He will back himself to earn a big money contact from 2018. Good on him, if he keeps up his form he will get it.

Love that his here next yr, and i really hope he get a fat pay day in SL in 2018-19 to reward his hard efforts and desire to make it.

As much as I want Rossy to earn what he should and test his worth I also want him here for as long as possible. He's been literally the only shining light we've had this year. Would rather players like him who play dominantly and want to be here over players who play like crap and bail because they think they deserve more $$$.

Mate id love another 10 Rossies here, but his busted his arse for minimal return, if our club can not offer him the money he can get elsewhere, id be 100000000% behind him going for the money! At his age and what his best days left are, take the coin.
Though we will get the best of him, as his age will only hinder him in the next 2-3 yrs.

His got a contract we are making him see it out. Positive direction for the club.

‘You’ll never be an NRL player’

Newcastle flyer Nathan Ross has been one of the Knights’ best performers this season but it was only a few years ago Wayne Bennett told him he’d never make it in the NRL.

The 27-year-old made his NRL debut under interim coach Danny Buderus late last year after Rick Stone was sacked mid-year after taking over from Wayne Bennett.

Had Bennett never left the club, then Ross could still be toiling away in reserve grade.

For it was only three years ago that the super coach told Ross he’d never made it at the top level.

“I did enough to get a pre-season with the Knights and halfway through that pre-season some people look at this person as the greatest coach of all time, gave me a tap on the shoulder and said that I’d never be an NRL player,” Ross told The Locker Room podcast.

“That would have been disheartening for a lot of people.

“I thought I was doing everything I had to do in order to be an NRL player.

“This is why he’s such a great coach.

“I was bitter about it for a long time but it’s not now until I actually understand what your life needs to be away from football in order for you to actually make it to the next level.

“He saw I wasn’t coming to training on Monday’s in the best condition … I wasn’t unfit at all.

“I was up there with the fittest group but my dedication to football wasn’t up there.”

Working three 14 hour night shifts before turning up for training, Ross had earned a train and trial opportunity with the Knights at the end of the 2013 season.
Former Knights coach Wayne Bennett.

After Bennett overlooked him, Ross spent the 2014 season in the NSW Cup where he was named fullback of the year.

The next year he secured a deal with the Knights.

But it didn’t come easy. It took some real hard work and a change in his home life to make it happen.

“He made the mid pre-season cuts and he said ‘the NRL isn’t a place for where you’re going’,” Ross said.

“I was working Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in the mines and turning up for pre-season on the Monday.

“I wasn’t giving football everything.

“At that stage of my life I wasn’t willing to sacrifice everything to play rugby league.

“I was half playing footy and half working.

“What I’ve taken from that experience is – if you’re going to do something. You’ve got to give it everything.”

Great work taking up the option, this ensures he will keep playing like a scalded cat in 2017 to land a big deal in 2018!!! Bennett will probably sign him!!

Good for you Ross Dawg. Every time you run out mentally give Benny the bird!

From what Ross said it seems Bennett was trying to motivate him. Ross seemed appreciative.

If that happens then he may not have much motivating him in 2018.

The way he said it, it wasn't as if he held a grudge against Bennett. It seemed as if it was more a motivational thing to say, i.e if Ross kept balancing his job and footy he wouldn't be an NRL player.

Just the route Benny would take when proven wrong. He is in the Bill 'we never make mistakes' Harrigan class!

Ross is not the first or last player Bennett didn't think could make it into the NRL. We just don't hear about it because ****heads like Buzz only care about when Brian Smith or Gus let go of a player.
Potro Civoneciva was a player Benett thought was hopeless that Cyril Connell tried recruiting to Brisbane until he talked Bennett into changing his mind. It happens

He didn't rate Wendell in the early days either! The myth of Bennett ended for me once I saw how two-faced he was when he was here!
