Nathan Brown discussion

Ramien's proved nothing yet, just another player with potential. Could end up playing on the wing yet.
Knights will never match the top teams if we can't get our wide defence in order. It's been a problem for a long time, maybe Brown needs to bring in some sort of defence specialist if he can't help them see the light.

NATHAN Brown has publicly expressed his strong desire to remain in Newcastle admit reports the Knights were set to offer him a lengthy contract extension.

Brown is in the final year of his current contract and The Sunday Telegraph reported the club are looking to make him the longest-serving coach in their history with a new five-year deal in the works.

After two consecutive wooden spoons in his two seasons at the club, Brown has assembled a roster which started the season on fire with two wins before Sunday’s 38-8 loss to the Sydney Roosters.

Speaking before the clash with the Roosters, Brown said he was keen to stay in the steel city.

“We certainly love Newcastle, myself and the family,” Brown told The Sunday Ticket.

“We’ve loved every minute.

“The people up there are great.

“We’ve gone through a really tough time and we’re starting to build a squad now that’s certainly on the improve.

“We know we’ve got a long way to go, but I’d definitely like to be a part of it for the next number of years if it works out well.”

5 years is a real show of confidence. The clauses that will be in place eliminate much of the risk and concern with an underperforming coach.

Having a coach locked up long-term that has the players respect will only help with retention and recruitment as well, I like that.

How come the tigers with a new coach and a new team can defend from the first minute of round 1, while we have to wait?

It's an excellent question slots and I'd argue their roster is worse than ours.

Our imports defend fine and have the right attitude, but Ross is always out of position, Sione has Petes over excited Kelpie mentality rushing out of the line, the Safiti's are just lazy, for blokes there size blokes should be on their back instead of trundling forward.

Giving the Safiti's more is there any desire there? Really lack hunger at the moment if you ask me.

Goes back to Bennetts saying about our locals just being happy with playing first grade with no great desire to win.

Sadly at the moment our depth which we thought is great, is non existent so no one to drop them for.

Good thing is we have a tonne of money for next year so hopefully we can punt the last of the she'll be right locals for either our young players coming through or more imports.

In a nutshell here is my issue with Brown. Of course there has been improvement in effort but there's been zero improvement in defence. The issues out of yesterdays game are a copy and paste job from the last 3 years at least. Does Brown see these issues ? If he does is he working on them ? If he's addressed the problem and players aren't learning why are they still in first grade ?

The issue is with lazy players not putting in an effort and stupid players that dont know how to man mark and want to rush infield .

The safitis have been rubbish this year, they should be monstering packs with their size. They lack aggression and seem uninterested at times.

Ross and sione constantly rushing in makes scoring out wide against us the easiest task for opposition.

All the imports that have come in have been brilliant and shows why they were from top 4 sides, it highlights the gap that we have in our playing stocks.

I don't think brown is at fault for our defensive deficiencies, our attitude towards defending has been poor from quite a few players. Unfortunately we cannot drop them as we don't have any better.

We've conceded 30 a game for going on 3 years. The imports weren't here last year.

I'd be getting a long rope and tying the entire team together across the park 1m apart,

Run drill after drill of them running up 3m off their 10m mark, and sliding left or right. No player breaks the line as they can't. If they still run around us so be it, but this rushing out in D makes us look a rabble out wide.

If they bring Ramien here and he starts on wing then that is just playing favourites. Moga gone for the year and I wasn't impressed by him for the games he played here so far. Sione is a toiler but we need a game breaker. Ramien is that. He'd be wasted on the wing.

Do something at least and whoever don't follow instructions replace him with someone that will.

Correct, I am agreeing with you hence shows that this isn't browns fault. Looks like the local players we have just don't put in like the teams of past.

The imports we brought in just highlight that fact more.

Yep, I honestly am at a loss to know what they do in defensive training.

This week I'd be dropping a Saf, and telling the other one he either plays with aggression, churns out the post contact metres or he will find himself joining his brother.

Id be doing the opposite tbh,
Throw them to the wolves, give them the starting front row spots and tell them this is our house and your mates to protect .
Now go out there and bash that team until they want to go home.

If they fail, then drop them both until they start to play like the 6'6 120kg monsters they are.

We don’t work together in defence, we don’t even move up in one line, only the players near the ball move up whilst the rest sit back and watch, terrible for a first grade side

Remember when Mal Reily said to Chief "you won't get sent off in a Grand Final Lad"

The Saifitis started slow last year too, maybe they just take a while to get going. A lot of players are like that, I'd be surprised if they don't hit top form again this year at some point. As for the other old guys, I wouldn't say Ross & Sione are lacking effort, just have no idea how to defend in a line properly, Lamb had a classic shocker, Barnett looks stuffed, he might be injured, Fitzy has been good but I thought he took a back seat yesterday, need to get himself involved, don't be scared to call for the ball over some of the more experienced guys.

Interesting looking at the tackle efficiency % of the team. Moga in the 50% range by far and away the lowest but unfortunately he's not going to improve that stat. Couple of surprises. Sione higher than Buhrer. Lillyman(91 tackles) top rated at 92.8% then Esse Esse (121) @ 91.6% and Griffin (163) @ 91.3%.Only 1 forward in Esse Esse averaging more than 80m @ 117. We might be lucky to be 2 from 4.
