I always thought Darius was one of our best players. There was a patch of form towards the end which was disappointing, but it seemed to afflict more than one player.

Rightly or wrongly people were ready to hate on Darius for so many reasons, his relationship with Bennett, 'that' interview, the fact that he played for QLD lol. And to top it off, he arrived at the Knights, pushed Gidley out of his preferred position and people seemed to interpret the whole thing as being fundamentally insincere and of commercial motivation. And so once his form fell away, it validated those dormant suspicions

As for Origin, he's a QLD Origin legend; he's done a good job of coaching the QLD U19S, and he'll have support from Bennett (and likely the usual cast of QLD future immortals and hall of famers).

I think it's a good appointment and as a Newcastle Old Boy I wish him the best (although not enough to win any games, NSW sweep in 27...up the Blues).

Darius WAS a dud in Knights colours, don’t know about being one of our best players.
I had a little bit to do with him off the field, and the bloke is a flog, with a massive chip on his shoulder .
I rented a house in Fern Bay for 12 months and Darius was a neighbour from hell, cops there once or twice a week, constant yelling and arguing with his missus, smashing stuff, it was a nightmare. I was glad when my rental contract finished.
On the field I don’t think he ever put in for the club, he was average at best in 90% of games, and then leaving the club and his teammates in the lurch by going on holidays in Greece mid season, when he was supposed to be in “ rehab”.

Not liking the bloke, regardless of how justified, doesn't change his achievements in RL. We didn't make the prelim final in 2013 with a dud fullback.

As others pointed out, he wasn't the only player who wasn't putting in that season, and it wasn't just because they were getting ripped off.
 
I agree his off field behaviour has influenced my view of him. There was much more I could have said, but I don’t need a defamation case against me. Believe me,it was bad.
I do admit he was a very good player for the Broncos, Dragons ( to a lesser extent) and of course Queensland and Australia, where he excelled consistently. The guy could obviously play footy, but I still feel he rarely performed for the Knights.
I have heard he has turned his life around, and has overcome some issues with mental health, so I give him credit for that, but I will still enjoy any misfortune that comes his way as Queensland coach.
