The “Queensland spirit” thing has come in when they’ve picked plodders they’ve had no other choice but to pick. When they’ve been written off because of an injury crisis, not written off due to stupidity at the selection table.
No one’s making him pick Cotter over Fermor or Loiero over Horsburgh. Or Toia over about five other players. He’s shooting himself in the foot and then saying “I’ll just Queensland my way out of it” in the hopes that the foot magically heals.

The only Queensland players who should be automatic selections are Tino, Carrigan, Hammer and Coates, and I would keep Collins in the team if I was Billy. A fair few others should well and truly have their cards marked.

The standard stand behind or directly next to the ruck for half the game and pretend to be involved. That’s Ponga’s specialty.

It reminded me of the games around 2009-11 where one side just wasn’t really in it at all. The good news is it’s not the Blues now.

True. At least we were watching generational talents like Lockyer, Thurston and Slater do their thing. Tonight just seemed flat. If NSW can play their best in Game 2 and 3 they should get 2 massive wins.

I’d put Haas, Latrell, Critta in that generational talent basket. Cleary played great I thought besides the goalkicking. All much better players than Billy Slater my most hated player ever.

Egg on my face for buying into the idea that you need to pick Moses or Cleary, not both.
Underestimated Moses’ adaptability and, honestly, humility, in accepting that second banana role.
The one knock you could put on Cleary is that he kind of has to be the main man for him to be at his best. If you pick Cleary, you have to turn the team over to him. Have to leave Teddy out, because he gets too involved and they get in each other’s road. Cleary and Munster have also been a bit clunky as a combo for the Kangaroos IMO. Moses deferring was essential to make it work. Hats off to him for doing so, and doing it so effectively.
