The history of the nib Newcastle Knights is kept alive by the many men who have pulled on the red and blue jersey since the Club’s inaugural year in 1988.
Knights TV has tracked down some of the best through the years to see where they are now and what their lives look like after footy.
It’s been more than 20 years since Jarrod O’Doherty first ran out for the red and blues, but looking back admits it was some of the best years of his life.
“It was a great experience,” O’Doherty told Knights TV.
“Having grown up here in the Hunter, dreaming of playing for the Knights and then getting the opportunity to do that was great.
“I formed some life-long friendships and there’s some mates that I’m still really close to, which is something really important to me and something I cherish.”
O’Doherty had two stints with the Knights, from 1997 to 1998 and then was back for the Club in 2001 to 2002, while also playing locally for Wests.
The gutsy forward also got the opportunity to play abroad in 2003.
“I went to Huddersfield and played in the super league so that was an enormous life experience and something I owe footy a lot for the experience I got,” he reminisced.
While some players were full-time on the field, O’Doherty was one of the many in those days who still had to hold down a full-time job, which helped his transition to life off the field.
“I was probably fortunate in some respects that while I played footy, I was never one of the higher paid players, I worked a lot of the time while I played,” O’Doherty explained.
“It got me into this industry (hospitality retail) and gave me some foundations in something that I could do after footy and build a career outside of rugby league.
“That’s something players really need to be aware of because footy doesn’t go forever and you need to have some sort of traction so you can make that transition a little bit easier.”
Home from England after retiring from the game, O’Doherty started a business which he worked on building up over time and just a few years ago bought a small operation locally.
“I built that up and in August last year we merged with Reward Hospitality which is a multi-national company, so I have got a strong partnership with those guys in this market,” O’Doherty added.
“They recognise a need for a local presence in this market and how parochial the Newcastle market is, and the partnership has worked really well and we’re growing really strongly.
“Another thing current players should realise is the network that you make through playing sport in this town is very powerful.
“They can potentially leverage themselves to create a life outside of footy when they finish.”
On the new committee for the Old Boys, O’Doherty is still heavily involved within the Club that he loves and is thankful for the platform it has provided him.
“I’m very passionate about the Knights,” said O’Doherty.
“The Old Boys come together regularly and my position on the committee has elevated that for me.
“I’m looking forward to the next 12 months where we are making some differences and building on the great work that the guys before us have put in place.”
And the former Knight is excited about what’s ahead for the red and blues, with a new look team in 2018.
“The young guys have been fantastic and their experiences over the last couple of years will put them in good stead for opportunities in first grade for the next couple of years.
“There are some good young kids there, Brock Lamb, Sam Stone and a number of others and I think it is really important to the people of this town that kids come through from their junior club and play here.
“There’s been some big opportunities to bring in some superior players and strengthen the squad, so all looks well for a fantastic season.”

Brad Godden may have made his NRL debut with the Knights in 1991, but it all started back in the Club's inaugural year of 1988 playing Jersey Flegg.
Born and bred in Newcastle, the former Australia representative recalls the awesome memories he had playing for the Club.
“It was a long time ago but I still love thinking about my time there,” Godden smiled.
“I had eight years with the Knights all up, a year at the Hunter Mariners... and a couple of years in England.
“I really enjoyed my time in England, but retired in 1999 and have been working hard ever since back in the real world.”
Unlike these days, most rugby league players back then both worked and played the game.
“In the first few years up until 1995 I was working as well as playing, mainly in the building game with a few of the other Knights boys, Robbie McCormack and Glenn Miller... we worked together in the construction industry,” said Godden.
“In 1995 when the Super League war hit, things changed for everyone and I became full time from then for the next three, four years.
“It was good to get a taste of the full-time career.”
Godden hung up the boots after his stint with Leeds Rhinos in England in 1999 and continued his work within the building industry.
“I worked in the building industry for the next few years, did a few home renovations, bought and sold a couple of little houses and then got into scaffolding with Robbie McCormack who had a business in Newcastle with another guy,” Godden explained.
“In 2013, I bought a section of that business off them, the residential, commercial section and went out on my own.
“It has been busy the last two or three years and I can’t see anything changing in the near future.”
The former fullback admits times have changed for players, but still believes it’s vital for young players to think ahead for when they finish up in the game.
“For a lot of the young guys, it would be good for them to do a trade or some sort of employment, just to keep their minds ticking over and give them a bit of a break away from footy,” explained Godden.
“It’s a difficult transition for a lot of guys coming from full-time footy back into the working environment."
It doesn’t matter that Godden has been absent from the game for a long time, he’s still kept in close contact with a lot of the Knights Old Boys.
“I still holiday every Christmas and Easter with Mark Sargent, Robbie McCormack and Steve Fulmer, and we’ve got a really good base of friends from way back that still get together and have a few beers here and there,” Godden said.
“That’s what footy is all about, making friends and life-long friends.”
And now with a new-look Knights outfit, Godden is excited for what’s ahead in 2018.

This history of the nib Newcastle Knights is kept alive by the many men who have pulled on the red and blue jersey since the Club’s inaugural year in 1988.
Knights TV has tracked down some of the best through the years to see where they are now and what their lives look like after footy.
Representative prop Matt Parsons played 106 games for the Knights and was part of the historic 2001 premiership winning team.
Now living in Werris Creek near Tamworth, Matt is still a devoted red and blues fan and although 14 years have passed since he hung up the boots on his NRL career with the Club, there’s still fond memories he’ll never shake.
“I finished in 2004 but my memories are pretty strong considering I went to Newcastle from South (Sydney Rabbitohs) and we were battling at that stage,” Matt said.
“We were able to win more games than we lost at Newcastle which was a good difference for me.
“In 2000, we had a really good team and blew the semi-final, but to be able to come back in 2001 and win the grand final made up for it.”
Lucky for Matt, he only worked and played in the early days of his professional football career but coming from a hard-working family, getting back into the workforce was never really a problem.
“When I finished footy, I was working for Carlton United Breweries in Newcastle before I got a job up here in Tamworth,” Matt explained.
“At that job I was away a lot, so I gave it away and went into my own businesses.
“I’ve got a dairy farmers run, a franchise with my wife at our property, and I’m in the Newsagency with my in-laws, so I’m pretty busy.
“I grew up working all the time and only had a few years out of it while I was playing footy, so I was able to go back into work without too many issues.”
The former Knight believes it’s important to have the right mentality when you finally decide to retire from the game.
“When you’re ready to get out, you need to be able to get up out of bed every morning and go to work, and work full days,” he added.
“I think the guys get into trouble who want their money easy and don’t realise you’ve got to work hard, even when you finish footy, so you need to have that work ethic behind you.
“I came from a hard-working, salt-of-the-earth background where my dad was a shearer and my mum worked for Telstra so I just had that bred into me.”
While he may not be in Knights heartland near Tamworth, Matt admits there’s still a lot of country fans nearby who follow Newcastle in the NRL.
“A lot of country people have their favourites and even their second teams as Newcastle because they can associate with Newcastle being a blue-collar sort of town,” Matt maintained.
“I watch the Knights play every week so I share all the fans frustrations at times.
“I’ve got three boys who follow the Knights as well so we’re still pretty keen on the team from up here.”
And while the Club has struggled to perform in the last three years, Matt is certain significant improvement is on the way for 2018.
“Things look like they’re definitely on the improve but we do have to take into account that we have won three wooden spoons in a row,” he said.
“The guys look to have recruited well and we’re moving along the right lines.
“I don’t think anyone’s lost a lot of faith in the last few years, but I think like everyone else, we’re all looking for a bit of improvement.
“Let’s win more games and go from there.”
