Knights Injury and Suspension Updates

We always seem to cop it unfortunately. Mrc have had it in for us for years. 2 matches for that is disgraceful.

Coggs want to play against his new club and do enough to earn a starting spot next year.
Good for us if he gives it his best shot.

Back on the paddock! Pearce nears NRL return

Newcastle Knights
Mon 25 Jun 2018, 02:46 PM

Mitchell Pearce is edging closer to making his highly anticipated return from injury following another positive move in his recovery from a torn pectoral muscle.

The nib Newcastle Knights captain has been sidelined since Round 7 and after successfully completing two weeks of contact worth with the training staff, he took part in the team's field session for the first time on Monday.

While that news is exciting, what will have supporters most excited about is the impact he's had at training.

According to teammate, Josh King, the playmaker hasn't missed a step.

"It felt really good," King said of having the halfback guiding the way.

"It's been a while since Pearcey has been out on the paddock with us and it was good to see him get back out there and it's crazy to see his skill level again even after being out for so long.

"It's good to have him back."

Mitch Barnett added; "it's good to see him out there getting the ball.

"We obviously look a lot sharper with him in the team. The sooner we can get him back, the better but we still have to do a job his week."

Pearce has been ramping up his training in a bid to return to the field in a few short weeks.

Having the benefit of the representative round and a bye in Round 17, Pearce has pencilled Round 18 against Parramatta to make his return.

In the short term, his teammates have a big clash to prepare for on Saturday.

The Knights host Canterbury and after a week's rest, the Club is itching to get back into action and make a charge towards the finals.

"A lot of them have copped criticism and that's not their fault," Barnett said.

"I dare say that will fire them up and I'm 100 percent sure they'll show up this weekend."

Round 16 injury update: Buhrer running, Saifiti leaves moon boot

Newcastle Knights
Mon 25 Jun 2018, 09:35 PM

Jamie Buhrer is pushing for an early return from injury.

Back running after having surgery on his knee, the 28-year-old is progressing at a rapid rate.

According to Physical Performance Manager, Tony Ayoub, the versatile forward will see the surgeon later this week but is on track for a comeback in Round 18, rather than Round 20 as first thought.

"He's going really well at the moment," Ayoub told newcastleknights.com.au.

"The last week or so, he's worked really hard with our physios and made a great recovery.

"We saw a positive sign (on Monday), he was out running. We ran him on the weekend which was great. (on Monday) he upped the ante again and wanted to do more which is an absolutely fabulous sign.

"We'll continue to work on him and up the ante. We see the surgeon again on Thursday, who has done a wonderful job with the surgery. We'll play it by ear.

"He's definitely on the mark for Round 18 after our next bye but you never know with Jamie. We're hoping if he continues to improve, it might be a good headache for the coach."

Meanwhile, Daniel Saifiti is recovering from his foot injury.

Like Buhrer, the prop is edging towards an early return.

"He's a out of the boot. A good sign," Ayoub said.

"He's out of the boot a little earlier than we expected. He's got no symptoms.

"Hopefully over the next week or two we'll be able to push him.

"What we thought would be Round 20 might be Round 19 or 20."

Injured players and expected return dates:

Tautau Moga (ACL, Season)

Jacob Saifiti (Shoulder, Round 24)

Jamie Buhrer (Knee, Round 18-20)

Daniel Saifiti (Foot, Round 18-20)

Mitchell Pearce (Pectoral, Round 18-19)

Nathan Ross (Groin, Round 16)

Jacob Lillyman (Abdominal strain, Round 16)

That’s devasting for Griffin his been very good for us this year too. With the required rehab he will struggle to feature in first grade next year either, hopefully he can get back on the Park thou bit of concern thou with him being 28 next year and you never know who serious knee injuries like that will heal or effect a player.

Sucks about Griff he is our best defensive player. But we bought 2 players with bad records of serious knee injuries and they are both out for the season. Both signings were a gamble and we lost.
In fairness to Griffin, his knee has been torture tested for most of the season and came through pretty well - anybody's knee would have given out with the forces exerted in that tackle. Nobodies fault, just really just rotten luck...

On the other hand, Moga just stepped without any force being exerted through a tackle and his knee gave out - still rotten luck but I think his issues are more of a structural weakness in his body, making him prone to this sort of injury

That was the worst ACL injury I've ever seen. His leg just snapped in half like a broken leg, but got the joint instead. That's the kind of injury that makes you fear how just walking will be like in the future, let alone playing. He was having a good game too.

On the risk factor, Griffin & Moga both were fit for a fair while so can't be angry at recruitment too much. In Griffin's case, it was a chance injury that could probably happen to anybody.

Griffin's knee is gunna take some skilled surgeon to put back together.
If it wasn't worse than Moga's before, it is now.
