Kalyn Ponga discussion

Gallen is sans personality yet C9 are trying to turn him into the next Chief as far as front rowers turned media personalities that is a huge mistake

His playmaking is a work in progress still.
In the opposed sessions he had some great efforts. In the Toronto opposed session he was unstoppable, scoring a couple of times and setting up Fitz, Denniss and Ross for line breaks and tries every time the defence had him covered, but in one of the Maitland opposed sessions he mucked most things up, including throwing an intercept pass where Tom Hughes and Brent Nadan combined to run the length of the field and score at the other end.
Yesterday we saw him create a try for Fitz, but later on he made the line break and threw a pretty poor pass to no one.
He is already as good a playmaker as Kurt Gidley was after 15 years, but I think he'll keep improving for the next few years at least, and we might see a few games where we wish he'd just hold the ball and run himself.

His playmaking (like the rest of his game) is only a work in progress because he’s 19. He still has a lot of development to go and the sky is the limit for him. His playmaking ability is top notch right now but. He’s easily been our most dangerous player the first two games. Whenever he’s got the ball in hand he looks likely to create something, whether it be through his running game or ball playing ability. Against the Raiders he looked scary good. Was causing so many problems for them down that left hand side. He’s just a natural. He’s already a better pure playmaker than Gidley. Easily. That was never Gidley’s strength. He was never known to be a ball player, however that looks to come naturally for Ponga.

If your plan was to repeat everything I said and make it sound like you are disagreeing, mission accomplished.

I gave him a rap and you responded by saying his playmaking is a work in progress still (obvious, he’s 19, but he's top notch right now), then rattled off about him throwing intercepts during trials and highlighted the play on the weekend where he sliced through Raiders defence but couldn’t get the last pass to stick (he still stepped up and created something out of nothing from pure individual brilliance). You then said he’s as good a playmaker as Gidley, which kind of sounds like a backhanded compliment as that was never a strength of Gidley’s game (just a weird comparison, apples and oranges).

I repeated none of what you said. I mentioned specific traits he possesses which equate to being a great ball player / playmaker. You responded with a post which was selling him short, IMO.

How many years did we sign him for?

He is from a union background so I have no doubt those headlines will start appearing towards the back end of his deal.

All Blacks etc

Four years from memory. On current form and potential it'd expect contract extension negotiations and upgrades to be forthcoming by the 3rd year at the latest

If he keeps playing better and better id be putting another 3yrs on the table mid next yr for him maybe with a few extra 100k on it per yr.

Better to keep him out of arms reach imo.

Our only real hope to sign him again when he is 23 and at his peak - assuming he keeps on the same improvement curve - is if he is very settled in the Hunter by then.

Him and Pearce have had 2 games. I was talking to an elderly couple this morning (not mad footy followers) who are now KP & MP fans. I've never known them to talk football but this morning they wouldn't shut up. The team has certainly created a lot of excitement around town.

The best opposed session he had, you wouldn't swap him for any fullback in the NRL.
The worst opposed session he had, Nick Meaney kicked his arse and Hodko tied him up in knots.
Obviously we all want him to keep delivering 9/10 performances, but eventually he'll have the sort of game you'd expect from a 19 year old.

He catches bombs like Slater is his prime.

Stupid question, is he quick over the 100? Like addo-Carr quick?

He’s the quickest man alive.
