Kalyn Ponga discussion

Do you have decent internet?

Know a couple of site that could help you if interested?

He was constantly pushed back or ragged dolled and we see that with kids and fullbacks its normal when they first come into grade, but he doesnt look like he has put on much size...

Showed he is stronger by not being rag dolled once... Will 100% be a 3rd playmaker out wide, needs to work on his short kicking game and he will be a threat thats for sure.

Brown has a good headache with watson, levi, jamie, lamb, pearce, cogger, griffin all after spots.

Na **** internet. Out in remote. Living off data so can't watch a whole heap of games. Will cost a fortune. Need to go on a Telstra plan it seems haha.

He has all the abilities a fullback needs. Just needs game experience at the top level to improve and become as good as he is touted to become.

Remember how it was preposterous to suggest that Ponga would be anywhere near the halves ?

This early on it's purely speculation. I reckon though it'll partly depend on the longevity of Pearce.

Without factoring in the rise of other talent in or outside our system imagine Lamb and Ponga as a post-Pearce halves pairing.

He has proper wanked himself silly after one game hasn't he. Poor guy will be exhausted if Ponga keeps it up over the first couple months.

Jeez i suggested that he would make a good 5/8 when we signed him and I'm still pulling people's feet out of my throat because 90% of people on here jumped down there with both feet ....

He will play in the halves at some point in his career, lets hope he stays with us and doesnt go back to QLD>

So far so good, 1 game lol

It would be a waste to use him in the halves for many years still. He could be an electric fullback, why ruin that by moving him into the line where he has to concentrate more on defence, tackle way more big guys while having less depth in attack & less freedom to roam the field. The only way he should move to the halves is if we have no one else or when he gets old & slows down.

If Brown is serious about wanting a running 5/8 as a key player for our gameplan, and everything he has done says he is very keen, the only guy currently on our roster with the potential to be that player is Ponga.
Rushing him into it before he is ready would be crazy, but I think the day Brown thinks Ponga is ready for the defensive workload will be about one day before he tries him out in the position.

I don't think we should move him from f/b i just said that i thought he would make a good 5/8 . I wouid leave him where he is he did everything right in his first game for us and besides that we have Lamb and Watson for 5/8 and we have Pythian as a back up for both those guys if god forbid they both got hurt . IMO Pythian is a talent too who would do very well at 5/8 for us .

Far to early to be considering him at 5/8, yes it will probably happen "a la Lockyer" but like him let's enjoy a few years at f/b then we will see, right now we are all ok at halves with Pearce, Watson, Lamb, Pythian, Johns and this year Cogger, we ain't so well of with f/b but we do have a potentially great one, sit back and enjoy.

Why is this even a conversation?

Seriously the KID has had 1 nrl game at fullback with us, over the next 10wks he will have dumb moments that may cost us a game and people will cry that his being paid to much and needs to be dropped.

Just let the kid find he's feet in the nrl in the position he chooses to play in for 2yrs then maybe bring this conversation in to play.

I think you know why!

Ponga is older than Lamb, Cogger, Mullen, Johns were when they made firstgrade, and the same age as Tyrone Roberts etc.
If Mullen can go from SG Ball to firstgrade at age 18 with one pre season, Ponga could play 5/8 in firstgrade at age 19 with 3 pre seasons, 10 firstgrade games and 3 seasons of under 20s if he was good enough.

Just because Mullen did it doesn’t mean it was right. As much as I rated Mullen he never got to be a great half sadly.
