Justin Holbrook discussion

It all lines up with the stuff I heard about him before he got the job & it's why I thought he was the only choice, but I'm honestly still shocked in the speed & scale of the turnaround.

It got to a point with AOB that we would all be screaming on here about the stuff we think the team is doing wrong & it seemed like every time the team did what we wanted e.g. chance their arm a bit and stop trying to play a grinding style the players weren't any good at, they looked way better instantly. That sucked so much. It shouldn't be the case that the fan on the hill sees things clearer than the guy in control.

With Holbrook, exact opposite, heard so many things in the off-season which raised alarm bells with me eg the switching up positions during pre-season, I was so convinced we needed to find a different role for Sharpe, such grave concerns about Dylan Brown as a 7 and Ponga playing without a more traditional halfback... and every time, nope, I'm wrong, Justin knows best.

Much prefer things this way personally! Every player in the team seems to be going better unless battling some sort of injury. That's what happens with a coach that understands everyone's strengths and plays to those rather than forcing players in a box.

Most impressive thing is how quick adjustments and improvements come. If Sharpe did his ACL tomorrow, we would adapt to a different play style with Sandon coming in, which would still be very effective. It feels totally essential that Brown & Ponga stay fit for us to properly compete, the version of this team that can win a comp is one where the play style is dictated by their top top tier talent - which is how it bloody well should be, that's where the money's going - but I know the team won't turn it up & make me hate watching them if they both did get hurt.

I've said it before but the speed at which the team can adjust does remind me of one specific coach: Craig Bellamy.

I'm just thankful the Knights were not happy just having made the finals more than not under AOB and after all thats better than we have been going of recent years. And really there was nobody better out there apparently to replace him with.

Ironically enough with all that said about the boring stuff, AOB also tried to be a bit like Bellamy when he was coaching the big four at the Storm, then big three in 2010s.

People also complained they could be a bit ‘boring’ and grinding but they were so good and had such good players in key positions that did all the fundamentals well which always put them in position to score points and win games.

Bellamy even admitted at times back then he would prefer to improve the ‘teams flow of attack’ when they went off script, and that was when they often lost games when they fell behind and were forced to play catch up and force their hand.

Warriors had the odd few impressive wins in finals games back then that very way, constantly going off script and being unpredictable. And again ironically enough guess who’s struggling hard with how much faster the game has been as well…

Yeah my understanding is he’s loosened the reins a lot.

Big part of that though is of course the transition between style of personnel, when you have Smith & Cronk your big advantage is execution & discipline. For years they filled the 6 jersey as cheaply as they could and as far as I could see invested more heavily in rep standard forwards. Billy Slater and a couple of wide players as the only real strike weapons. They were great at winning 20-0.

Whereas once they got the Grant-Hughes-Munster-Pappy quartet together, they really went all-in on blowing teams off the park with those guys and economised heaps elsewhere. Hard to think of a worse starting front row in a grand final than Josh King and Tui Kamikamica with all due respect.

Hard to imagine AOB’s Knights changing so radically with the change in personnel.
