Joseph Leilua released by the Knights

Why should we be the nice guys?

Either give us a player in return as compensation (one of Cornish, Williams or Shillo would be good) and if not, make him suffer for the rest of the year in NSW Cup.

Agreed, can see us snagging shillo in return. No way do they give us sam williams he's their starting halfback and I don't think Cornish is a massive upgrade from roberts...

I highly doubt we will even consider getting anyone off them, to be honest. We will be the nice guys and give them Leilua for nothing.

Exactly. He shouldn't be given free reign without us gaining something in return.

Knights to release BJ Leilua early with Raiders set to sign exciting centre

NEWCASTLE could release departing centre Joey Leilua as early as Friday despite a potential deal with the Canberra Raiders to trade him for prop David Shillington now appearing unlikely.

It is understood the two clubs have been in secret negotiations over a swap deal but have not been able to reach an agreement with the Knights believed to be hesitant in signing 31 year old Shillington to an extended contract because of his age.

“It’s unlikely,” one source told The Daily Telegraph when asked about the possible deal still going ahead.

But it appears Leilua’s time in Newcastle is all but up irrespective. And he still seems certain to link with the Raiders.

The Knights and Leilua have seemingly been on a collision course ever since the Samoan international announced several weeks ago he would exercise a get-out clause in his contract to leave at the end of the season even though he had a year left on his contract.

At the time, Knights coach Rick Stone said his centre would not be released early and would be retained until the end of the year. But that scenario now appears increasing unlikely.

There is a feeling in the Knights camp it is pointless to keep selecting a player who does not want to be at the club when there are youngsters such as Jake Mamo and Chanel Mata’utia who have been outstanding in NSW Cup who have been waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

Leilua has made it pretty clear he has wanted out of the Knights ever since his commitment and attitude was questioned by Stone during the pre-season.

Stone could not be contacted yesterday and Knights CEO Matt Gidley did not want to comment ahead of a strategic planning day involving the club’s board of directors on Friday.

“We’ll be discussing all our recruitment and retention plans among a raft of other things with the board [on Friday],” Gidley said.

“I’d rather not comment on individuals until after our meetings.”

That explains why Shillington had such a massive game against us.
At least he was trying to play for a contract.

Well they did at least try.

Why not go through with the Shillington deal though? He's been killing it recently and should still have a couple of good years in him at least. It's not like we can get a lot better than him.

We are hesitant to sign shillington to an extension given his age but we are happy to sign Mickey paea and sign a 35 year old Jeremy smith for another year? Shillo is a decent prop and of course we wouldn't bother getting something in return for giving up a player.... I don't get it

I don't like Shillington but there is literally no point in not taking the deal. Leilua won't be here next year anyway, why not get someone in return? Especially a prop.

If it were just for this year i'd have no problem with it, but he obviously wants to sign on for a few years, and he is old and injury prone.

Sign him onto 2 year deal with a 3rd year option in our favour. It'd more than the Raiders will give him. All of a sudden our front row looks decent... not sure what the problem is Mr Gidley you twat

Gosh our club is good at one thing... .making itself look stupid. That is the stupidest thing passing up on Shillington because of his age.. He wouldn't even be close to the oldest in our team. We have 3 decent centres... and not enough established props.

He's played most of the year in NSW Cup for the Mounties anyway, so it's not like we have to lock him into first grade the entire time we sign him for (but since we are too numpty to ever drop a player, we no doubt would).

31 is when front rowers often hit their prime, as well.

More idiocy from the Knights admin, I'm surprised they haven't said they're not interested because he's not a local junior.

3 year $1 million deal for Shillo would be ideal.

We are a laughing stocks if we dont pull out all stops to get him.

All of a sudden we have Snowden, Shillo and Pae on the books and we have a good engine room, not great but first great standard for the first time in a decade.

Yep, add in Stockwell again next season and that's not too bad. Well, not as terrible as usual.

Forgot Stocky.

I have to admit I don't rate Korbin at all even at lock. NSW cup player for mine who's handy for depth.

He sure as hell doesn't have the work rate to be a prop.

Apparently Barry Toohey has been told the Knights are trying to sort out another trade with the Raiders.
