Jermaine McEwen discussion

I am biased as I had an uncle who was bowled down and killed by a drunk driver who was also disqualifed. But imo any amount of alcohol in your system is too much to be driving … if you’re feeling dusty the next morning then get an uber.

Thankfully nothing worse came from it, and I’m sure he’ll learn from it.

Got plenty of brothers who are coppers in my masonic lodge, they actually catch just as many if not more with early morning RBTs.

If you week up clutching the head or feeling dusty, your more at risk than having 1 to many the night before for sure.

Driving on a suspended license charge - you know full well you can’t. That’s the big one for me. Unless there’s a misunderstanding there. But if you’re suspended, you’re suspended.

The DUI charge part. I’ve heard many stories of players on their way to training in the morning, after a few drinks the night before getting done. Was it Willie Mason a while back?
Without context it’s hard to comment and we await the courts.

I’ll be disappointed if this is related to any Knights events. Mates don’t let mates allegedly drink drive.

I wonder if a Knights punishment could be taken Into account during any court proceedings? Think we either suspend this week, or withhold suspension until Court case where all the facts are heard.

His mindset and mental health should be taken into account and a priority. Support takes a lot of different shapes and sizes.
Don’t not disagree 1 bit! Just lots of people jumping to conclusions is all

Yeh, I agree with you (on re-read it perhaps didn’t come across that way, sorry) - it’s easy to assume he’s been on the beers, got drunk and gone for a hoon on face value…allegedly.

There could be a few mitigating circumstances here.

I’ll reserve my judgement until the courts pass down their verdict and we hear the facts.

I guess, if he’s in good mindset and doing ok, we play him, unless Knights have facts to the contrary. NRL has the stand down policy for these types of things. We explore the options of suspending him and give out punishment when we hear the facts and the courts have done their thing.

Agree with the sentiment that everyone makes mistakes and there’s a lesson to learn in everything. He can be grateful things weren’t a lot worse…

Whether they like it or not, they are role models for the community.

Doesn’t one article say McEwen told the Knights of the incident and the Knights themselves told the NRL integrity unit.

Now I’m no lawyer or suggesting he is guilty but based on purely what we know it doesn’t sound good that’s all.

I’m not sure if it’s been mentioned and I missed it, but why does he have a suspended licence in the first place? (Genuine question), as I think that factors into any punishment that he may receive

Is it from previous drink driving charges, speeding, using his mobile on a public holiday, I don’t know

For me, if it’s from drink driving, then a harder punishment is required because he isn’t learning from his previous mistakes

I know he is young and young people make mistakes, so getting caught and punished now by the club could be the best thing for him, in life, not just football

We have had a good run with off field incidents I believe. And not the ones the dumb Sydney media thinks are a scandal (like Ponga/Mann, Pearce) I mean actual ones like the below.
We haven't had anyone have any recent issues with drug use, or buying, DV etc

The main ones were the Moga drunkenly slapping a taxi driver
Jacob Saifiti being involved in an altercation which resulted in a broken leg (to his credit he's been squeaky clean since)
Mullen having his contracted ripped up for PED use

Dylan Pythian (Immediately released) after failing two drug tests
Zane Tetevano with DV (Immediately released) and he got a second chance with the Roosters

Pales a bit in comparison to the Bathurst incident of 2005 but feel like we've had it good compared to the Sydney clubs

Hopefully in McEwen's case it's also a one off now that it's public, it does seem like making guys pay large percentage based fines like Saifiti and Moga did have helped.

Let’s call it a mistake? Sure! Sounds like he’s made a few “Mistakes” if he’s driving on a suspended licence. Getting a licence suspended is mistake one, mistake two is driving whilst suspended, mistake three is DUI … whilst suspended!
The “he’s young” doesn’t cut it for me. A mistake like these can cost lives and we should accept no excuses and they should be penalised.
They are role models whether they like it or not! As much as fans may pay the price, what’s it going to take to deter the next idiot to not make the same mistakes!
Jermaine is not just a NRL player, he’s foremost a young father - he needs to have a good look at himself.

Hmm, anyone wanna bet even if proven guilty nothing will happen to him via the club, it will be interesting to see the standards the club set, because every other punishment will be judged by this one.

Next time someone misses a bus, can’t suspended them if you don’t suspended someone from this.

Again this is all dependent on a guilty verdict, but it will be interesting

What indications are there that the club won't take appropriate action?

His licence could've been suspended for any number of reasons, such as not paying motorway tolls because the notification or mail are going to a wrong address, whatever, who knows, point is we don't know why his licence is suspended.

It was low range DUI. Given that DUI of alcohol is legal until a given point, it also follows that a low range DUI could be somewhat accidental.

Despite the headline we actually have very little information to know exactly what sort of punishment the lad deserves. I certainly wont be judging him.
