Paul 'Fatty' Vautin sidesteps the sack from Nine
HE may have thought the full-time hooter was approaching but with the return of his old mate David Gyngell as CEO Paul "Fatty" Vautin is confident he is back in the game at Channel 9.
The Fatman has reportedly been telling friends that he will be reinstated as The Footy Show host, with a statement set to be released shortly.
Fatty was scheduled to engage in crisis talks with boss Jeff Browne this week but, with Gyngell's return to the network, that has now been put "on hold".
Confidential understands programming reviews have been put off until James Packer's best man Gyngell officially starts work in November.
"Paul and he get on very, very well," a Nine insider said yesterday.
"In the old days when he was working at Nine, but before he was CEO, it was one of his ideas to get The Footy Show up and running.
"With Gyngell back a lot of people will be coming back to Nine."
Rumours that Vautin, who has an uneasy relationship with Nine sports boss Steve Crawley, would be "boned" emerged during a barbecue at his Northern Beaches home two weeks ago.
The popular personality even joked on-air that he should be talking to Channel 7 about a job.
He was tipped to be replaced by new recruit Laurie Daley in a revamped version of the show next year, with avid Maroons fan Vautin asked to work out his contract as host of a Brisbane-based rugby league show.
The 48-year-old larrikin, whose annual salary is about $500,000, has been battling bouts of depression since he was knocked unconscious while performing a stunt on the show two years ago.
